West Hempstead, New York
West Hempstead is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 19,835 at the 2020 census. It is an unincorporated area in the Town of Hempstead and is represented by Councilman Edward Ambrosino. The residents in the hamlet had once unsuccessfully proposed to change their hamlet's name to Mayfair Park. History West Hempstead first appeared on maps as the name of a Long Island Railroad station in 1893. There are three railroad stations within its borders: West Hempstead, Hempstead Gardens, and Lakeview. The line continues to Valley Stream where it joins the Babylon Branch. Halls Pond Park, the main park within West Hempstead, was dedicated by Nassau County in 1961. The smaller Echo Park contains a public indoor pool. Hempstead Plains
The Hempstead Plains is a region of central Long Island, in what is now Nassau County, in New York State. It was once an open expanse of native grassland estimated to once extend to about . It was separated from the North Shore of Long Island by the Harbor Hill Moraine, later approximately Route 25. The modern Hempstead Turnpike approximately traces the separation of the plain from the South Shore of Long Island. The east-west extent was from somewhat west of the modern Queens, New York City border to slightly beyond the Suffolk County border. The Town of Hempstead, now America's most populous civil township, was first settled by Europeans around 1644. Interlaken is a village in Seneca County, New York, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. The name is related to the village's position between two lakes. The Village of Interlaken is in the northern part of the Town of Covert and is northwest of Ithaca, New York. History First settled in the late 1790s and early 1800s, the Village of Interlaken was home to many families from the New England and New Jersey areas. Early businesses included hotels, blacksmiths, post office, bank, and in time the railroad station. All designed to support the local families and the farmers from the surrounding area. The Babylon Branch is a rail service operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The term refers to the trains serving Montauk Branch stations from Valley Stream east to Babylon; in other words, the Babylon Branch is a rail service rather than an actual track. The electrification of the Montauk Branch ends east of the Babylon station, so the Babylon Branch is mostly served by electric trains. Valley Stream is a station serving the residents of Valley Stream, and is the first station (traveling eastbound) in Nassau County. The station is located at Franklin Avenue and Sunrise Highway, west of Rockaway Avenue, and is from Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. The station is wheelchair accessible with an elevator from street level; parking facilities and taxis are available. The station is located on the Long Island Rail Road's Atlantic Branch; the tracks of the Montauk Branch pass directly north of the station. The Far Rockaway Branch and West Hempstead Branch diverge east of the station. Lakeview is a station along the West Hempstead Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It is located on the southeast corner of Eagle Avenue & Woodfield Road in West Hempstead, New York, and exists as little more than a high-level sheltered platform. Hempstead Lake State Park is nearby. The former Southern Hempstead Branch crossed the line north of this station.
