West Glamorgan County Council ( cy, Cyngor Sir Gorllewin Morgannwg) was the county council of the county of West Glamorgan in south-west Wales, from its creation in 1974 to its abolition in 1996. History The county was created in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, covering the western part of the old administrative county of Glamorgan and the city of Swansea, which had been a county borough, independent from Glamorgan County Council. West Glamorgan County Council was abolished in 1996 under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, with the districts in the area being reorganised to become unitary authorities, taking over the functions previously performed by the county council. Since 1 April 1996 the area has been divided into the two unitary authorities of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. Swansea County Borough Council
Swansea County Borough Council was established in 1889 under the Local Government Act 1888. The first elections were held in November 1889. The number of electoral wards had been increased, from four to ten, namely Alexandra, Brynmelin, Castle, East, Ffynone, Landore, Morriston, St Helen's, St John's and Victoria. The number of representatives were increased to 40. Representatives were to 'retire' for re-election in rotation, with ten seats to be filled at each council election. The county was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974. It was incorporated into the new county of West Glamorgan. As a result of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, which came into force on 1 April 1996, a number of new unitary authorities were created including the new Swansea Council. Swansea Guildhall
The Guildhall ( cy, Guildhall Abertawe) is one of the main office buildings of the City and County of Swansea Council. The Guildhall complex, which includes the City Hall, Brangwyn Hall (concert hall) and the County Law Courts for Swansea, is a Grade I listed building. History The building was commissioned to replace the old Swansea Guildhall. The site selected for the building had previously formed part of Victoria Park. The foundation stone for the building was laid on 4 May 1932. The building was designed by Sir Percy Thomas in the neoclassical style and was officially opened by The Duke of Kent on 23 October 1934. The design envisaged a building finished in white Portland stone, and included a art deco clock-tower, making it a landmark. The clock-tower featured the prow of a Viking longship, jutting out on each side as a reminder of Sweyn Forkbeard, thought to be the founder of Swansea. Following local government re-organization the authority was abolished in 1996 and its powers transferred to two unitary authorities, Cardiff City Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council. The fifth election to South Glamorgan County Council was held in May 1989. It was preceded by the 1985 election and followed by the 1993 election. Boundary changes There were no boundary changes at this election. Candidates Conservative and Labour candidates contested all seats. Following the break-up of the SDP-Liberal Alliance, most seats were contested by both the Social and Liberal Democrats and the continuing SDP. There were a smaller number of Plaid Cymru and Green Party candidates and a few Independents. Outcome Labour retained control with an increased majority, by capturing a number of Conservative seats. The 1973 South Glamorgan County Council election was the first election to South Glamorgan County Council and was held in April 1973. It was followed by the 1977 election. Candidates Conservative and Labour candidates contested the vast majority of seats. In contrast there were relatively few Liberal and Plaid Cymru candidates. In Cardiff, many members of the previous County Borough Council sought election to both the new South Glamorgan authority and the new Cardiff City Council (where the elections were held a few weeks later).
