West German University Press
West German University Press (also "The University Press Bochum") is a spin-off of the Ruhr University Bochum in Germany. Founding In 1999 the university press was founded as a spin-off of Ruhr University Bochum with funds from the Northrine-Westfalian Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research, under the so-called Program for financially safeguarding the founding of enterprises from within universities. As a preparation, in 1998 the model of Harvard University Press was studied in Cambridge MA, some elements were taken over for the founding process in Germany. Memberships Immediately with its founding, the university press became a member of the Association of German Book Trade. Since 2003, the press is member of the European University Press, a network of European University Presses, and since 2014 in the international Association of University Presses. Ruhr University Bochum
The Ruhr University Bochum (, ) is a public research university located in the southern hills of the central Ruhr area, Bochum, Germany. It was founded in 1962 as the first new public university in Germany after World War II. Instruction began in 1965. The Ruhr-University Bochum is one of the largest universities in Germany and part of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the most important German research funding organization. The RUB was very successful in the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments (2007), a competition between Germany's most prestigious universities. It was one of the few institutions left competing for the title of an "elite university", but did not succeed in the last round of the competition. European University Press
European University Press was founded on 20 January 2003 . It has several outlets in Germany and tries to have a regional networking role for other European university presses. So far, the University Press has published books of members and institutions of more than 30 European universities. Aims The European University Press wants to enhance the visibility of international and especially European research results especially in comparison to American research results which are seen as dominating. For this purpose, it fosters multilinguality when introducing new publications and supports English abstracts of German and French research results. It also supports an English paper as a condensation of a non-English monograph. It encourages European scholars to submit English papers, summarizing their research and making it accessible in English. The Association of University Presses (AUP) is a membership organization of university presses, founded in 1937 as the Association of American University Presses. AUP has over 150 members including, Cambridge University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, University of Chicago Press, University of Toronto Press. Frankfurt Book Fair
The Frankfurt Book Fair (German: Frankfurter Buchmesse, FBM) is the world's largest trade fair for books, based on the number of publishing companies represented. It is considered to be the most important book fair in the world for international deals and trading. The five-day annual event in mid-October is held at the Frankfurt Trade Fair grounds in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The first three days are restricted exclusively to professional visitors; the general public attend the fair on the weekend. Several thousand exhibitors representing book publishing, multimedia and technology companies, as well as content providers from all over the world gather in order to negotiate international publishing rights and license fees. Open access (OA) is a set of principles and a range of practices through which research outputs are distributed online, free of access charges or other barriers. With open access strictly defined (according to the 2001 definition), or libre open access, barriers to copying or reuse are also reduced or removed by applying an open license for copyright. The main focus of the open access movement is "peer reviewed research literature". Historically, this has centered mainly on print-based academic journals. The German National Library (DNB; german: Deutsche Nationalbibliothek) is the central archival library and national bibliographic centre for the Federal Republic of Germany.
