West District, Taichung
West District () is a district of Taichung, Taiwan. It is the second smallest district in Taichung City after Central District. Former Taichung City Hall and part of Taichung City Government offices are located in this district. History The district used to be part of Taichung provincial city before the merger with Taichung County to form Taichung special municipality on 25 December 2010. District (Taiwan)
Districts are administrative subdivisions of the Taiwan, Republic of China (Taiwan)'s special municipality (Taiwan), special municipalities of the second level and provincial city (Taiwan), provincial cities of the third level formerly under its Provinces of China, provinces. There are two types of district in the administrative scheme. Ordinary districts are governed directly by the municipality/city government with district administrators appointed by the mayors to four-year terms. The mountain indigenous district is a local government body with elected district chiefs as well as district council serving four-year terms. Budokan By Taichung Takenori Hall A
The , often shortened to simply Budokan, is an indoor arena located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. It was originally built for the inaugural Olympic judo competition in the 1964 Summer Olympics. While its primary purpose is to host martial arts contests, the arena has gained additional fame as one of the world's most outstanding musical performance venues. The Budokan was a popular venue for Japanese professional wrestling for a time, and it has hosted numerous other sporting events such as the 1967 Women's Volleyball World Championship. Most recently, the arena hosted the Olympic debut of karate in the 2020 Summer Olympics, as well as the judo competition at both the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2020 Summer Paralympics. A number of famous rock music acts have played at the Budokan. The Beatles were the first rock group to play there in a series of concerts held between June 30 and July 2, 1966. Taichung Literature Museum
The Taichung Literature Museum (TLM; ) is a museum in West District, Taichung, Taiwan. History The museum buildings were originally constructed as a police dormitory in 1934 during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. In 2009, the buildings were designated as historical buildings by Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government. In April 2010, the buildings were renovated by the city government and turned into the Taichung Literature Museum to honor literature contribution and promote literature in Taiwan. The museum exterior part and premises were opened to the public in April 2015 and the museum was fully opened on 26 Augusts 2016. National Taiwan Museum Of Fine Arts
The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA; ) is a museum in West District, Taichung, Taiwan. NTMoFA was established in 1988 and is the first and the only national-grade fine arts museum in Taiwan. The major collections are works by Taiwanese artists, covering modern and contemporary Taiwanese arts. The museum covers 102,000 square meters, including the Public Outdoor Sculpture park, making it one of the largest museums in Asia. National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts was temporarily closed for renovation in 1999 due to damages caused by the 921 Earthquake and reopened in July 2004. The National Museum of Natural Science () is a national museum in North District, Taichung, Taiwan. Overview The museum covers and is a six-venue complex housing: the Space Theater, Science Center, Life Science Hall, Human Cultures Hall, Global Environment Hall, and Botanical Garden. Sun Li-jen
Sun Li-jen (; December 8, 1900November 19, 1990) was a Chinese Nationalist (KMT) general, a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, best known for his leadership in the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. His military achievements earned him the laudatory nickname "Rommel of the East". His New First Army was known as the "Best Army under heaven" and credited with effectively confronting Japanese troops in the 1937 Battle of Shanghai and in the Burma Campaign, 1943–1944. Perhaps because of his foreign military training, he did not have the full confidence of Chiang Kai-shek. Sun was relieved of battle command in the Chinese Civil War in 1946, and although he was made Commander in Chief in 1950 after the retreat of the Nationalist central government to Taiwan, he was given only ceremonial roles. Taichung Prefectural Hall
The Taichung Prefectural Hall () is a former government building in West District, Taichung, Taiwan. History The building was originally constructed in 1913 during the Japanese rule of Taiwan as the Taichu Prefectural Hall () which housed the city hall of Taichū Prefecture. The last of four expansions was completed in 1934. It was then used as the office of Environmental Protection Bureau of Taichung City Government. The building was designated as a historic building in 2002 and as a city-designated historic building in 2006. In November 2017, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs requested the city government to assign the national heritage status to the former city hall. The application for national heritage status was formally submitted by the Taichung City Government in April 2018. Taichung Shiyakusho
The Taichung Shiyakusho () is a historical building in West District, Taichung, Taiwan. History The building was constructed in 1911 as a municipal building under the Japanese rule of Taiwan. The building underwent renovation in 2014 and was reopened in February 2016 as a café and art center. Architecture The building is a three-story Baroque-style structure. The ground floor houses the Café 1911 which is operated by Rose House Group. The two upper floors house an art center. Transportation The building is accessible within walking distance west of Taichung Station of Taiwan Railways. The Shenji New Village () is a former dormitory area in West District, Taichung, Taiwan. History The place used to be the dormitory area built by the Taiwan Provincial Government for the residence of auditing office employees. It was then redeveloped into a cultural and creative center. National Taichung University Of Education
The National Taichung University of Education (NTCU; ) is a university in West District, Taichung, Taiwan. Founded in 1899 at the Confucian Temple in Changhwa county, it moved to the current site in 1923. In 2005, the university was renamed National Taichung University of Education. NTCU had a College of Education, College of Humanities and Liberal Arts, and College of Mathematics and Information Science. History In 1899, the school was established in the Changhua Wunwu Temple. In 1902, the school was suspended and the students were transferred to the Taiwan Mandarin School and Tainan Normal School.
