West Caribbean Airways S.A. (abbreviated as WCA) was a commercial airline founded in December 1998 with its headquarters at Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellín, Colombia after moving there from San Andres Island in 2001. It began operating in November 1999 and ceased operations in September 2005. History The company was founded on December 29, 1998, by Colombian businessman Hassan Tannir and began operations on November 13, 1999. Originally based in San Andrés, it began operations with four Let L-410 Turbolets that served San Andrés and Providencia Island as the first destinations. In 2000, West Caribbean Airways added flights to Cartagena, Monteria, and Barranquilla with ATR 42s leased and also expanded to international routes to Varadero, Cuba; Panama City, Panama; and San Jose, Costa Rica. Olaya Herrera Airport ( es, Aeropuerto Olaya Herrera) is an airport located in Medellín, Colombia, that serves regional and domestic flights. Additionally, the airport is used by general aviation and features several hangars for charters. Today, it is considered the main regional airport of the country due to the large number of scheduled and charter flights operated to and from the airport. It was formerly known as ''Medellin International Airport'' prior to the opening of José María Córdova International Airport in the year 1985, which is located in the nearby municipality of Rionegro, east of Medellin. West Caribbean Airways Flight 9955
West Caribbean Airways Flight 9955 was a scheduled flight between Isla de Providencia and San Andres Island, Colombia that crashed on 25 March 2005, killing 9 of the 14 passengers and crew on board. Accident The aircraft, a Let L-410 Turbolet, had just taken off from El Embrujo Airport at 9:50, when the left engine flamed out. The crew continued with the takeoff, but the speed of the aircraft decreased rapidly. The aircraft then banked dangerously too far to the right and stalled. The aircraft crashed into a mangrove forest, located just from the airport runway. Both pilots and 7 of the 12 passengers were killed in the crash. One passenger initially survived the crash, but succumbed to their injuries shortly after being rescued. The survivors were taken to hospitals in San Andrés and Bogotá. Apartadó () is a town and municipality in the Antioquia Department, Colombia. "Apartadó" means "river of plantains" in the local Indian language.
