Wesson is a town in Copiah County, Mississippi, Copiah and Lincoln County, Mississippi, Lincoln counties, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,925 at the 2010 census. History The town of Wesson was founded in 1864, during the American Civil War, Civil War, by Col. James Madison Wesson. Having lost his mills at Bankston, Mississippi, Bankston, Wesson relocated to the town that now bears his name. There he built the Mississippi Manufacturing Company which produced a fine quality cotton fabric. In 1871 he sold the mill to William Oliver and John T. Wesson cooking oil is a Brand name, brand of vegetable oil manufactured in Memphis, Tennessee, and sold by Richardson International. Historically, Wesson was cottonseed oil, but as of 2009 the products sold under the Wesson brand are oil mixtures that may include canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil or Sunflower, sunflower oil. History Founding Wesson was originally a trademark of the ''Southern Cotton Oil Company'', named after David Wesson (1861–1934), a food chemist at the firm who, in 1899 developed a novel process for deodorizing cottonseed oil, producing the first commercial all-vegetable shortenings from cottonseeds. This new product was marketed as ''Snowdrift''. The Savannah, Georgia, factory was erected in 1911 and torn down in 2004. In the 1920s, the vegetable oil division was spun off as the ''Wesson Oil & Snowdrift Company''. USS ''Wesson'' (DE-184) was a built for the United States Navy during World War II. She served in the Pacific Ocean and provided escort service against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys. She returned home at war's end with a very respectable seven battle stars to her credit. She was laid down on 29 July 1943 at Newark, New Jersey, by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co.; launched on 17 October 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Eleanor Wesson; and commissioned on 11 November 1943. World War II Pacific Theatre operations ''Wesson'' departed New York on 28 November for shakedown off Bermuda. She returned to New York on 28 December 1943 for post-shakedown availability which lasted until 9 January 1944 when she sailed for the Panama Canal Zone. After transiting the Panama Canal, ''Wesson'' departed Balboa on the 19th, bound for Hawaii in company with , and arrived at Pearl Harbor on 1 February.
