Wesley Woods
Wesley Woods Senior Living owns and manages retirement communities across North Georgia. Founded in 1954 by leaders of the North Georgia Conference of the Methodist Church to provide the first Methodist Home for the Aged. In 1960, the Methodist Home for the Aged recommended that the North Georgia Conference of the Methodist Church purchase 15 acres on Clifton Road in Atlanta from Emory University to build a retirement community. In 1962, the Methodist Home for the Aged became known as Wesley Homes, Inc. Wesley Homes began its affiliation with Emory's Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center in the 1980s formalizing its ties with the University. In 1998, that affiliation grew stronger and led to an agreement under which nearby Wesley Woods Center campus came under Emory's umbrella. Out of this grew the Wesley Woods Center of Emory University, with interdisciplinary training, research and treatment programs for geriatric care. A retirement community is a residential community or housing complex designed for older adults who are generally able to care for themselves; however, assistance from home care agencies is allowed in some communities, and activities and socialization opportunities are often provided. Some of the characteristics typically are: the community must be age-restricted or age-qualified, residents must be partially or fully retired, and the community offers shared services or amenities. North Georgia
North Georgia is the northern hilly/mountainous region in the U.S. state of Georgia. At the time of the arrival of settlers from Europe, it was inhabited largely by the Cherokee.
