Wentworth Mansion
The Wentworth Mansion is a hotel in Charleston, South Carolina. It was built in 1886 as a home for cotton merchant Francis Silas Rodgers (b. 7 May 1841, d. 13 Mar 1911 (aged 69)) and his family. Rodgers' is buried in Magnolia Cemetery. The mansion is Second Empire in style. The Rodgers Mansion was purchased in 1920 for US$100,000 by the Scottish Rite Cathedral Association of Charleston, a Masonic organization. In 1922 it constructed an auditorium which could accommodate the organization's 600 members on the property, connected by a corridor to the mansion; the auditorium was removed some time later. Wentworth Military Academy and College was a private two-year military college and high school in Lexington, Missouri. Wentworth was one of six total military junior colleges in the United States. The institution was founded in 1880 and closed in 2017. History Background Lexington's Civil War Battle of the Hemp Bales was still a recent memory when Stephen G. Wentworth founded Wentworth Military Academy in 1880. By the 1870s, the town had already attained the reputation as the "Athens of the West" for its many academic institutions. Lexington was home to three notable schools for girls. History In 1903, Boston businessman Arioch Wentworth donated the majority of his estate, estimated at $7 million, for the purpose of founding an industrial school within Boston. A board of seven directors incorporated Wentworth Institute on April 5, 1904, as a school "to furnish education in the mechanical arts". The directors spent several years investigating the educational needs of the community, increased the endowment, and reached a settlement with Wentworth's daughter, who had contested his will.
