Wendover (Kentucky)
Wendover, also known as Frontier Nursing Service or Big House, is a historic house and former medical care facility near Hyden, Kentucky. Built in 1925, it is notable for its association with the American effort to professionalize midwifery, led by Mary Breckinridge (1881-1965). It was headquarters of the Frontier Nursing Service, an organization which continues today. Wendover was named a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1991 for this role. It now serves as a bed and breakfast inn and retreat operated by the Service's success, Frontier Nursing University. Description and history Wendover is located in a rural setting about south of Hyden, Kentucky on a south-facing hillside, overlooking the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River. Dogtrot Architecture In Kentucky
The dogtrot, also known as a breezeway house, dog-run, or possum-trot, is a style of house that was common throughout the Southeastern United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Some theories place its origins in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Some scholars believe the style developed in the post- Revolution frontiers of Kentucky and Tennessee. Others note its presence in the South Carolina Lowcountry from an early period. The main style point was a large breezeway (instead of a hallway) through the center of the house to cool occupants in the hot southern climate. Architects continue to build dogtrot houses using modern materials, but maintaining the original design.
