Welsh Place-Name Society
The Welsh Place-Name Society was founded in 2011 with the aim of promoting an awareness and understanding of the study of place-names and their relationship to the languages, environment, history and culture of Wales. History On 20 November 2010 Cymdeithas Edward Llwyd held a conference on the subject of Welsh toponymy at Plas Tan y Bwlch. In that meeting it was agreed to form the Welsh Place-Name Society. Welsh Toponymy
The place-names of Wales derive in most cases from the Welsh language, but have also been influenced by linguistic contact with the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Anglo-Normans and modern English. Cymdeithas Edward Llwyd
is a Welsh natural history organisation whose name commemorates the great Welsh natural historian, geographer and linguist Edward Llwyd (1660–1709). The Cymdeithas Edward Llwyd organises regular country walks throughout Wales in sites of interest of the Welsh environment, including SSSIs and post-industrial landscapes. These are Welsh-language walking groups, although learners are just as welcome. They also organise a variety of nature and environmental activities, including lectures, publications and conservation work. Plas Tan Y Bwlch
Plas Tan y Bwlch in Gwynedd, Wales, is the Snowdonia National Park environmental studies centre, administered by the National Park Authority. It is located approximately east of the coastal town of Porthmadog, overlooking the valley of the River Dwyryd and the village of Maentwrog. The centre provides courses about the Snowdonia National Park and the surrounding region of Wales. History Plas Tan y Bwlch was built by the Oakeley family during the 19th century on the site of a first house probably built in the early 17th century. Additions designed by the Chester architect John Douglas were made to the house for W. E. Oakley in 1872. The nearby Oakeley Arms Hotel was also once part of the estate but was sold off in the early 20th century. The Oakeley family owned a huge slate quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog from which slates were carried to Porthmadog by the Ffestiniog Railway which passed through the estate.
