Wellington, Texas
Wellington is a city and county seat of Collingsworth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,189 at the 2010 census. History Sometime in 1889 or 1890, as smaller ranches and farmlands were being purchased, Ernest Theodore O'Neil, his brother-in-law John Simon McConnell, and John W. Swearingen, together had purchased the land upon which the town currently sits, for $5.00 per acre. Subsequently, O'Neil, who originally owned a fourth of the section of the township, purchased the interests of McConnell and Swearingen, and retained sole ownership of the land. The 1890 census showed 357 inhabitants across the county, with 89 ranches and farms and of land in cultivation. In August 1890, a petition was circulated to organize the county, choose a county seat, and elect county officers. Two potential townships were proposed: Wellington and Pearl. Collingsworth County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 2,652. Its county seat is Wellington. The county was created in 1876 and later organized in 1890. It is named for James Collinsworth, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and first chief justice of the Republic of Texas (a recording error in the bill accounts for the error in spelling, which was never corrected). Collingsworth County was one of 30 prohibition, or entirely dry, counties in Texas, but a vote in 2017 changed this law. The county was created in 1876 and later organized in 1887. It is named for George Campbell Childress, the author of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Samnorwood Independent School District (SISD) was a public school district based in the community of Samnorwood, Texas (USA). History The district had one school. It came into existence in 1934 by combining seven local schools: Aberdeen, Abra, Dpzoer. Lutie, Nicholson, Plymouth, and Prairie View. Samnorwood ISD later absorbed the China Grove, Elm Valley, Enterprise, Hackberry, Lone mound, Needwood, and Roundup school districts. On July 1, 1991, Lela Independent School District stopped operations, and Samnorwood ISD, along with Shamrock Independent School District, educated Lela ISD students until that district was formally merged into Shamrock ISD on July 1, 1992. The secondary grades were discontinued in the fall of 2011 when only one high school student graduated.
