Wellingore is a village and civil parish in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 356. It is situated on the A607 road, approximately south from Lincoln. It conjoins the village of Navenby to the north. The Viking Way traverses through the villagepassingfrom the side of the cliff edge to Ermine Street. The name 'Wellingore' is thought to derive from the Old English for 'ridge at the place with the spring/stream'. Population In 1801 there was a resident population of 559, which peaked to 943 in 1861. In the 1971 Census there were 618 people recorded. Buildings in Wellingore Wellingore is an attractive village with many of the older houses built in the local limestone. Wellingore was the first village in North Kesteven to be designated a Conservation Area in February 1971. RAF Wellingore
Royal Air Force Wellingore or more simply RAF Wellingore is a former Royal Air Force fighter relief landing ground located south of Navenby, Lincolnshire and south of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England. History The airfield was originally opened in 1917 as a Royal Naval Air Service station called Wellingore Heath. The airfield reopened in 1935. By the winter of 1939/40, the airfield was fully operational and consisted of two grass runways, a concrete perimeter track and several hangars. It initially operated as a Relief Landing Ground (RLG) for RAF Cranwell before later operating as a RLG for RAF Digby. Various squadrons equipped with Spitfires, Hurricanes, Blenheims and Beaufighters flew from the station. The airfield was closed in 1947. Navenby
Navenby is a village and civil parish in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. Lying south from Lincoln and north-northwest from Sleaford, Navenby had a population of 2,128 in the 2011 census and in March 2011, it was named as the 'Best Value Village' in England following a national survey. A Bronze Age cemetery and the remains of an Iron Age settlement have been discovered in the village. Historians also believe Navenby was a significant staging point on the Roman Ermine Street, as the Romans are reported to have maintained a small base or garrison in the village. Navenby became a market town after receiving a Royal Charter, charter from Edward the Confessor in the 11th century. The charter was later renewed by William Rufus, Edward III of England, Edward III and Richard II of England, Richard II. The A607 is an A road in England that starts in Belgrave, Leicester and heads northeastwards through Leicestershire and the town of Grantham, Lincolnshire, terminating at Bracebridge Heath, a village on the outskirts of Lincoln. Viking Way
The Viking Way is a long distance trail in England running between the Humber Bridge in North Lincolnshire and Oakham in Rutland. History The route was officially opened on Sunday 5 September 1976 at Tealby, by the Deputy Chairman of Lincolnshire County Council; it was to be opened by the chairman, John Hedley-Lewis, but he was ill, and died the following December. Hedley-Lewis was President of the local Ramblers' Associations, and a memorial stile was made for him on the route at Stenwith, a half-mile north of the ''Rutland Arms'' in Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir. The Countryside Commission recognised the significance of the Viking Way as a high quality long distance walk linking other major routes in Eastern England, these being the Yorkshire Wolds Way at the northern end, the Hereward Way and Macmillan Way from Oakham and indirectly via the Hereward Way, the Jurassic Way from Stamford and the southern end of the Peddars Way from Thetford. It lies north from Grantham, 14 miles (22 km) south of Lincoln and 9 miles (14 km) north west of Sleaford on the A607 between Welbourn and Fulbeck, and at the southern edge of the Lincoln Cliff. Brant Broughton (pronounced ''Brew''-ton) is a small village in the Brant Broughton and Stragglethorpe civil parish (where the population is listed), in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It lies north of the A17 approximately 8 miles (13 km) east of Newark-on-Trent, 12 miles (19 km) north west of Sleaford and 12 miles (19 km) south of Lincoln.
