Wellford is a city in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,378 at the 2010 census, up from 2,030 in 2000. History Wellford was founded in 1840 by a man named Wellington, who was building a railroad in the area. He settled and named the town Wellington. When the town was chartered on December 9, 1882, the name was changed to Wellford. New Hope Farm (Wellford, South Carolina), New Hope Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Geography Wellford is located at (34.951087, -82.098497). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.3 km2), all land. Alexander Wellford
Alexander Wellford (April 15, 1911 – September 29, 1993) was an American tennis player who played in the 1953 Wimbledon singles championships. Career He was, at age 42, perhaps the oldest player in the draw at Wimbledon. He lost at Wimbledon in four sets to Ivor Warwick, who two rounds later, played a competitive match against Ken Rosewall. That year, he also played in the French Championships, losing a close match to Paul Jalabert, who won a set off Lewis Hoad in the next round. Wellford had won the Tennessee state men's singles title in 1953 before playing in Europe. In the spring at St. Augustine, Florida, he played a good match against Vic Seixas, who won Wimbledon in June 1953. In the first set against Seixas, Wellford took the ball on the rise and passed Seixas at the net a number of times, getting a 5–2 lead before eventually losing the match. Charles Franklin Wellford is an American criminologist, emeritus professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland–College Park. He previously served as the department's chair. In 1996, the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice established the Charles Wellford Fellowship in his honor. He was chair of the University of Maryland's Athletic Council from 1995 to 2008. He was the president of the American Society of Criminology (ASC) during 1995–96. Charles Wellford Leavitt (1871–1928) was an American landscape architect, urban planner, and civil engineer who designed everything from elaborate gardens on Long Island, New York and New Jersey estates to federal parks in Cuba, hotels in Puerto Rico, plans of towns in Florida, New York and elsewhere.
