Wellerlooi
Wellerlooi (; li, De Loj ) is a village in the Dutch province Limburg. It is part of the municipality Bergen. This church village is located between Nijmegen and Venlo, on the eastern side of the Maas Wellerlooi lies in the heart of National Park De Maasduinen. The part of the national park that belongs to Wellerlooi is named ''De Hamert''. History The village was first mentioned in 1501 as "'t Welreloo", and means "open forest beloning to Well. Wellerlooi started as a heath A heath () is a shrubland habitat found mainly on free-draining infertile, acidic soils and characterised by open, low-growing woody vegetation. Hostellerie De Hamert
Hostellerie De Hamert was a restaurant in Wellerlooi in the Netherlands, most famous for its asparagus dishes in spring. It is a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 1963 and retained that rating until 1989. GaultMillau awarded the restaurant 12.0 out of 20 points. Former head chef Herman van Ham took care about the kitchen for 39 years. When Bernard Lieftink took over in 1989, the restaurant lost its star. ''Hostellerie De Hamert'' is one of the founders and still a member of Alliance Gastronomique Neerlandaise. ''Hostellerie De Hamert'' went bankrupt in 2019. Bergen (; li, Baerge ) is a municipality and a village in the south-eastern Netherlands. Population centres The village of Bergen The village of Bergen lies about 28 km north of Venlo, close to the river Meuse. Although the municipality is named after this village, the municipal hall is located in the town of Nieuw-Bergen, the largest village in the municipality. Located near the German border, approximately 5 miles from Nieuw-Bergen, with Weeze Airport also being just a short distance away. In 2001, Bergen had 304 inhabitants. National Park De Maasduinen
De Maasduinen National Park ''(duinen = dunes)'' is a national park in the Dutch province of Limburg, founded in 1996 and covering approximately 4500 ha. The landscape consists of forests and heathlands on a sandy plateau along the river Meuse close to the German border. The estate 'de Hamert' is the heart of the park. Until 1998 the national park was called 'De Hamert' after this estate. The present name is derived from the parabolic dunes which date from the last glaciation. Landscape and history The present characteristics of the park are strongly influenced by an intense interplay of wind, water and humans through the course of time, resulting in a unique pattern of drifting sand ridges or parabolic dunes. At present drifting sand is rare due to the forestry programs of the state at the beginning of the 20th century. Besides heathlands and forests, there are several fens in the park.
