Welfare State International
Welfare State International was a British experimental theatre group formed in 1968 by John Fox and Sue Gill, Roger Coleman and others. It became "A collective of radical artists and thinkers who explored ideas of celebratory art and spectacle between 1968 and 2006." Background The company's name was originally 'The Welfare State', based on the concept of offering art for all on the same basis as education and health. Welfare State International was initially known for staging large-scale outdoor spectacular events. At this time (the late 1960s), forsaking theatres and galleries for the street was unusual. In November 2001, Welfare State International was described by the Guardian Guide as "Britain's foremost arts and installations collective." Shadowland Theatre is a community arts theatre and collective of visual and theatre artists on Toronto Island. It is a professional, not-for-profit theatre company and registered charity, incorporated in 1994. History The arts performance company Shadowland (legal name, Shadowland Repertory Company) was founded in 1982 by Whitney Smith and Victor Coleman with a mandate of producing musicals using shadow puppetry and other alternative theatrical media. The company was named after the early Hollywood screen monthly, Shadowland (magazine). T. J. Eckleberg is a musician, producer, poet and theatre director originally from Sydney. He was the artistic director at Shopfront, an Australian contemporary arts centre between 2004 and 2010. His name comes from Dr. T. J. Eckleburg, a fictional oculist in ''The Great Gatsby''. A fictional oculist, and financier of music producer Yul Singh, named Dr. T. J. Kneehigh Theatre was an international touring theatre company founded in 1980 by Mike Shepherd and based in Cornwall, England. The company was based in barns on the southern Cornish coast, at Gorran Haven, but the administration was in Truro. On 3 June 2021, Kneehigh announced it would close. Overview Kneehigh was started in 1980 by Mike Shepherd. Early productions were performed in village halls, marquees, cliff-tops and quarries. Experimental theatre (also known as avant-garde theatre), inspired largely by Richard Wagner, Wagner's concept of Gesamtkunstwerk, began in Western theatre in the late 19th century with Alfred Jarry and his Ubu Roi, Ubu plays as a rejection of both the age in particular and, in general, the dominant ways of writing and producing plays. Horse and Bamboo Theatre or Horse + Bamboo Theatre is a British theatre company founded in 1978 by Bob Frith.
