Welaregang is a rural community in the far south east part of the Riverina and situated about 11 kilometres south west from Tooma and 15 kilometres south east from Ournie. At the , Welaregang had a population of 162. The community area is named after the parish of Welaregang, and the nearby Welaregang Station also takes the name. There are numerous other grazing properties nearby. Welaregang is situated on the Ournie to Tooma road, a dirt track, and only from the Murray River, the border with Victoria. During the time that the Tooma District was considered as a proposed location for the national capital of Australia, the area around the village reserve at Welaregang was identified as a site for the city. Tooma, New South Wales
Tooma is a locality and village community in the Snowy Valleys Council local government area, in the eastern part of the Riverina region of New South Wales. Location Tooma is in the valley of the Tooma River, not far from its confluence with the Murray River. The village is adjacent to Tumbarumba Creek, a tributary of the Tooma River. It is about east of Welaregang and south of Tumbarumba. History Tooma Post Office opened on 1 January 1873. A school opened in Tooma in February 1876 and closed in August 1980. The Tooma District was one of ten locations that were shortlisted for the site of Australia's national capital in 1900. It was one of the last to be eliminated. In the final series of parliamentary ballots in October 1908, Tooma was one of the eleven sites in contention, and it survived until the eighth of the nine ballots, after which only Dalgety and the eventual capital site ' Yass Canberra' remained in contention. Ournie, New South Wales
Ournie is a rural community in the far south east part of the Riverina and situated about 15 kilometres north west from Welaregang and 20 kilometres south from Munderoo. Ournie is situated on the banks of the Ournie Creek which flows into the Murray River and the area is only about 4 kilometres from the border of Victoria. The town was for a period the site of a small gold rush and the population grew to over 400 people in the late 1800's. At the time the town was centred around the gold mining area at . The remains of the old mind shafts still exist at this location. However the site is now located on private property.
