Weir Engine House
The Weir Engine House is a historic fire station located at 530 Weir Street in Taunton, Massachusetts. It was built in 1889 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It is one of two stations in the city, along with the Whittenton Fire and Police Station designed by Taunton's second fire chief, Abner Coleman. It was built by contractor James T. Bassett. The building is a 2-1/2 story brick structure, with a rear ell and a hose-drying tower. It is covered by a hip roof with large central gabled wall dormer at the front. The station has three equipment bays with segmented-arch granite lintels. Above the outer bays are single sash windows with granite sills and lintels. The second-story central bay has a group of three sash windows, above which, in the gable, are three similar but truncated windows, with a field of scalloped wood shingles above. Whittenton Fire And Police Station
The Whittenton Fire and Police Station is a historic fire station and police station located on Bay Street in Taunton, Massachusetts. Built in 1888, it is one two surviving 19th-century Queen Anne-style fire stations in the city. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Description and history The Whittenton Station is located on the east side of Bay Street, a major north-south artery leading north from downtown Taunton, and just north of its junction with East Britannia Street. It is a brick structure whose main block is 2-1/2 stories in height, topped by a hip roof with a large central gable-roofed projecting dormer. A two-story ell projects to the right at a recess, with a three-story hose drying tower behind. The Central Fire Station is an historic fire station at Leonard and School Streets in Taunton, Massachusetts. Built in 1869, it is the third oldest fire station still in use in the country, and the oldest in the city. It is the oldest *continuously operated* fire station in the country, never having closed for any period of time. It houses Taunton's Engine 1, Ladder 3 and the Deputy Chief. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Description and history The Central Fire Station is located at the southwest corner of Leonard and School Streets in the city's central business district. It is a handsome brick 2-1/2 story structure, with a hip roof that has centered gables on its street-facing sides, and a mansard-roofed tower at the southwest corner. East Taunton Fire Station
East Taunton Fire Station is a historic fire station located on Middleboro Avenue in the East Taunton section of Taunton, Massachusetts. It was built in 1899 to replace a rented facility that housed the Old Colony Engine Company. It is a two-story brick building, five bays wide, with a hip roof. The rightmost three bays project forward, with a cross-gable hip roof, with the rightmost bays housing engines, and the left bay of the projection providing the main pedestrian entry. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It is occupied by the Taunton Fire Department's Engine 9, Forestry 1, and the Taunton Police "East Taunton Precinct". Weir Village, Massachusetts
Weir Village (also known as "The Weir") is a village of the city of Taunton in Bristol County, Massachusetts, located about one mile south of the city center on the banks of the Taunton River, near the point where it becomes tidal. The village takes its name from fishing weirs which were placed across the Taunton River from pre-colonial times until the early 20th century, to catch herring (also known as "alewifes"). While much of the commercial part of the village lies on the west side of the river, along Weir Street , a dense residential area extends in an easterly direction across the river along Plain and Berkley Streets.
