Weinan () is a prefecture-level city in the east Guanzhong, central Shaanxi, Shaanxi province, China. The city lies on the lower section of the Wei River confluence into the Yellow River, about east of the provincial capital Xi'an, and borders the provinces of Shanxi and Henan to the east. The name "Weinan", literally meaning "south of the Wei River", describes the location of the city's urban area, urban district (China), districts being mostly south of the Wei River, although majority of its metropolitan area actually lies on the north side of the river. A prefecture-level city () or prefectural city is an administrative division of the People's Republic of China (PRC), ranking below a province and above a county in China's administrative structure. During the Republican era, many of China's prefectural cities were designated as counties as the country's second level division below a province. From 1949 to 1983, the official term was a province-administrated city (Chinese: 省辖市).
