Weightlifting At The Friendship Games
Weightlifting at the Friendship Games was contested at the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, Bulgaria between 12 and 16 September 1984. 80 athletes competed in 10 events (all men's individual). Olympic Weightlifting
Olympic weightlifting, or Olympic-style weightlifting (officially named Weightlifting), is a sport in which athletes compete in lifting a barbell loaded with weight plates from the ground to overhead, with each athlete trying to successfully lift the heaviest weights. Athletes compete in two specific ways of lifting the barbell overhead: these are the snatch and the clean and jerk. The ''snatch'' is a wide-grip lift, in which the weighted barbell is lifted overhead in one motion. The ''clean and jerk'' is a combination lift, in which the weight is first taken from the ground to the front of the shoulders (the clean), and then from the shoulders to overhead (the jerk). The clean and press, wherein a clean was followed by an overhead press, was formerly also a competition lift, but was discontinued due to difficulties in judging proper form. Zdravko Stoichkov
Zdravko Stoichkov ( bg, Здравко Стоичков; born 2 July 1964) is a Bulgarian weightlifter who competed in the 1980s. He won several World and European medals. He became a bronze medalist at the World Championship in Moscow at 75 kg in 1983. A year later, he was European champion in Vitoria, Spain, and in Friendship Games in Varna again became gold medalist to score much higher than the Olympic champion of Los Angeles. From this it becomes clear that the boycott of Bulgaria at the Games in 1984 deprived Stoichkov of a well-deserved Olympic title. He became second at the European Championship in Poland in 1985. Stoichkov is the winner of the European Weightlifting Cup for 1987 with the Bulgarian team in Miskolc, Hungary. He set three world records in the 75 kg weight class. Stoichkov has a very long career. Yury Zakharevitch
Yury Ivanovich Zakharevich (russian: Юрий Иванович Захаревич, born January 18, 1963) is a former Olympic weightlifter for the Soviet Union. He trained at Dynamo in Dimitrovgrad. Yury competed in the middle-heavyweight (90 kg), sub-heavyweight (100 kg) and heavyweight (110 kg) weight classes during his career. Yury Zakharevich has been described as one of the most technically gifted weightlifters of all time. Leonid Arkadevich Taranenko (russian: Леонид Аркадьевич Тараненко, born June 13, 1956) is a former Soviet/ Belarusian weightlifter and coach. His 266 kg clean and jerk in 1988 was the heaviest lift in competition for 33 years, until Lasha Talakhadze exceeded it, lifting 267 at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships. Andor Szanyi is a weightlifter who competed for Hungary. His entire career has been marred by controversy after he was stripped of the silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics for cheating. Blagoy Blagoev ( bg, Благой Благоев; born 4 December 1956) is a retired Bulgarian weightlifter.
