Powerlifting
Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. As in the sport of Olympic weightlifting, it involves the athlete attempting a maximal weight single-lift effort of a barbell loaded with weight plates. Powerlifting evolved from a sport known as "odd lifts", which followed the same three-attempt format but used a wider variety of events, akin to strongman competition. Eventually odd lifts became standardized to the current three. In competition, lifts may be performed equipped or un-equipped (typically referred to as 'classic' or 'raw' lifting in the IPF specifically). Equipment in this context refers to a supportive bench shirt or squat/deadlift suit or briefs. In some federations, knee wraps are permitted in the equipped but not un-equipped division; in others, they may be used in both equipped and un-equipped lifting. Simplice Ribouem
Simplice Ribouem (born 5 December 1982) is a Cameroon-born Olympian weightlifter who competed for Cameroon up to 2006, and for Australia from 2009. He finished 13th in the 94kg event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Ribouem won bronze for Cameroon in the 85kg event at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. He was an Australian gold medallist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, winning a gold medal in the 85kg event. Ribouem did not medal in the 2011 World Weightlifting Championships – Men's 94 kg. He won silver competing for Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Maryse Turcotte
Maryse Turcotte (born February 23, 1975 in Sherbrooke, Quebec) is a retired female weightlifter from Canada, who competed twice for her native country at the Summer Olympics: 2000 and 2004. A two-time gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games she won a gold medal in the women's – 53 kg division at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She currently works as a physician. Her sister, Karine Turcotte Karine Turcotte (born 28 August 1978) is a Canadian weightlifter. Erika Yamasaki
Erika Yuriko Iris Yamasaki (born 2 September 1987) is an Australian weightlifter. The daughter of Minoru Yamasaki and Ann Alvisio, she started Weightlifting in 2000, when she was tested in a talent identification program, along with her brother John Yamasaki. Erika first started to represent Australia in 2003 at the Oceania Championships, Niue Island. She has now competed at several international events, including Oceania Championships, World Championships, World Cup, Commonwealth Championships, Pacific and Commonwealth Games. She represented Australia at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She finished in 12th place in the women's 59 kg event. Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi (born 1 March 1966) is the most decorated Indian sportswoman in weightlifting. Background Devi was born on 1 March 1968 at Kairang Mayai Leikai in Imphal, to a Hindu Meitei family. She started taking interest in sports while still in Imphal's Sindam Sinshang Resident High School in 1978. Damon Joseph Kelly (born 1 December 1983 in Atherton, Queensland) is an Australian weightlifter who competed at the 2008 Olympic Games finishing ninth.
