Weetangera Parish, Murray
Weetangera Parish is a parish of Murray County, New South Wales, Australia, a cadastral unit for use on land titles. It is now very small, after most of the land in the parish was transferred to the Australian Capital Territory in 1911, but it once included the south-west part of what is now the Canberra town centre of Belconnen including the town centre. It currently includes a small section of land in New South Wales between the ACT border, Ginninderra Creek and the Murrumbidgee River. Former boundaries Before 1911, it included the area between Ginninderra Creek to the north and the Molonglo River to the south, with the Murrumbidgee River on the west, and land near what is currently the suburb of Aranda to the east. Samuel Shumack
Samuel Shumack (1850 - 1940) was an early Canberra pioneer and Australian farmer. He wrote his autobiography in the 1920s and it was published in 1967 as an account of rural living in the Canberra district. Shumack Street in Weetangera is named after his father, Richard Shumack. Early life Samuel Shumack was born in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland. He and his family moved to Australia in 1856, escaping the Irish depression. The family sailed in the ''Bermondsey'', arriving in Sydney on 29 August 1856. Upon arrival in Sydney, six-year-old Shumack and his family together travelled the three-week journey by horse-drawn cart to the sheep station Duntroon. At Duntroon Shumack's father, Richard Shumack, was employed for two years by Robert Campbell. The Ginninderra electorate is one of the five electorates for the unicameral 25-member Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. It elects five members. History It was created in 1995, when the three-electorate, Hare-Clark electoral system was first introduced for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
