Weert, Antwerp
Weert is a village in the municipality of Bornem, Antwerp Province, Belgium. The village used to located on the left bank of the Scheldt, but the river changed course during the 13th century, and it is now located on the right bank. The village was first mentioned in 1240 when it was sold to the Saint Bavo's Abbey in Ghent for cultivation. Around 1320, the area was enclosed by dikes. The Kingdom of Belgium is divided into three regions. Two of these regions, Flanders and Wallonia, are each subdivided into five provinces. The third region, Brussels, does not belong to any province and nor is it subdivided into provinces. Saint Bavo's Abbey
Saint Bavo's Abbey ( nl, Sint-Baafsabdij) is a former abbey in the currently Belgian city of Ghent. It was founded in the 7th century by Saint Amand, who also founded Saint Peter's Abbey, Ghent, near the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt rivers. Originally, the abbey was also called Ganda, a name of Celtic origin, meaning "river mouth", referring to the Leie river debouching into the Scheldt river. In the 9th century, the abbey was raided twice by Vikings, which made the monks flee to Laon. After an absence of nearly 50 years, they came back to Ghent and re-established the abbey.
