Weedsport, New York
Weedsport is a village in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. The name is from Elihu and Edward Weed, merchants who helped found the village. Weedsport is in the town of Brutus, west of Syracuse. It was a port on the Erie Canal. Whitford's Airport is north of the village in the town of Cato. History Weedsport was within the Central New York Military Tract. The village was originally named "Weed's Basin" because the town had a basin (boat turnaround) during the Erie Canal era. The name was then changed to Weedsport. The village was incorporated in 1831. Weedsport Elementary School was built in 1908. Renovations to the elementary school in 1986 added more classrooms, a gymnasium, and a homemaking facility. Weedsport Junior/Senior High School was built in 1957 and later expanded in 1967 and 2005. Erie Canal
The Erie Canal is a historic canal in upstate New York that runs east-west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. Completed in 1825, the canal was the first navigable waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, vastly reducing the costs of transporting people and goods across the Appalachians. In effect, the canal accelerated the settlement of the Great Lakes region, the westward expansion of the United States, and the economic ascendancy of New York State. Interstate 90 In New York
Interstate 90 (I-90) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that runs from Seattle, Washington, to Boston, Massachusetts. In the US state of New York, I-90 extends from the Pennsylvania state line at Ripley to the Massachusetts state line at Canaan, and is the second-longest highway in the state after New York State Route 17 (NY 17). New York State Route 34 (NY 34) is a north–south New York state route located in Central New York. Its southern terminus is at the Pennsylvania state line in the village of Waverly, where it connects to Pennsylvania Route 199 and meets I-86/ NY 17. Its northern terminus is at NY 104, outside the village of Hannibal. Frank and Eliza Tryon House is a historic home located at Weedsport in Cayuga County, New York. First Baptist Church of Weedsport is a historic Baptist church located at Weedsport in Cayuga County, New York. It is a masonry structure built in 1870 that substantially modified a meetinghouse built in 1839 and enlarged in 1854. The main block retains the core of the earlier building. Centreport Aqueduct
Centreport Aqueduct is a historic aqueduct located in the town of Brutus near Weedsport in Cayuga County, New York. The aqueduct was constructed in 1854-1857 as a part of the Weedsport section of the "Improved Erie Canal." The wood and stone aqueduct carried the Erie Canal over Cold Spring Brook near its juncture with North Brook. The aqueduct structure is approximately 125 feet in length, 125 feet in width, and 16 feet in height. Improvements were made to the aqueduct in 1895 as part of the "Nine Million Dollar Improvement." The aqueduct ceased being used after development of the New York State Barge Canal System in 1917.
