Weedpatch Camp
The Federal Migrant Labor Camp Program Arvin was one of many camps that were set up under the Federal Migrant Labor Camp Program. Under the New Deal thousands of camps for displaced farm workers had been created. The New Deal migrant camp program shifted its approach after a three year survey was completed in 1934.Cannon, Brian Q. 1996. “‘Keep on A-Goin’: Life and Social Interaction in a New Deal Farm Labor Camp.” ''Agricultural History'' 70 (1): 1–32. The survey was conducted by the California Division of Immigration and Housing and it reported in regards to the existing camps "No provision is made for sanitation, water supply, or even general camp cleanliness". State Route 184 (SR 184), locally known as Weedpatch Highway, is a state highway in the U.S. state of California. Located in Kern County, it runs from the intersection of SR 223 (Bear Mountain Boulevard) and Wheeler Ridge Road near Arvin north to SR 178 in Bakersfield. It is mainly a 2-lane conventional highway, expanding to four lanes in Lamont and Bakersfield. The highway serves local agricultural land south of Bakersfield. Lamont is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California, United States. Lamont is located south-southeast of downtown Bakersfield, at an elevation of . The population was 15,120 at the 2010 census, up from 13,296 at the 2000 census. Geography Lamont is located in south-central California about from Bakersfield and about from Los Angeles.
