The genus is named in honor of German botanist and physician Georg Wolfgang Wedel, 1645–1721. Taxonomy There are difficulties regarding the classification of this genus for its affinities are uncertain. Further studies are needed to clarify its taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships.Orchard, Anthony E. 2013. Wollastonia (plant)
''Melanthera'' (common name: squarestem), is a genus of perennial flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native to North and South America, as well as Africa, Asia and Oceania, including Hawaii. The most common species of this genus is ''Melanthera biflora'', found in the coastal areas and islands of the tropical belt of the Indo-Pacific region. Together with ''Portulaca oleracea'', ''Ipomoea pes-caprae'' and ''Digitaria ciliaris'', ''Melanthera biflora'' is usually one of the first species colonizing degraded or altered environments in tropical zones of the planet. Despite their general hardiness, leaves of ''Melanthera'' species are often attacked by rusts such as ''Uromyces columbianus'' and '' Uromyces martinii''. Taxonomy There are difficulties regarding the classification of this genus for its affinities are uncertain. Further studies are needed to clarify its taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships. Verbesina
''Verbesina'', many species of which have crownbeard as part of their common names, is a genus of flowering plants, in the family Asteraceae. It is a large genus of about 350 species. All the species bear white or yellow flowers similar to small sunflowers. The name ''Verbesina'' very likely refers to the similarity of the foliage to that of the (unrelated) ''Verbena.'' ''Verbesina'' species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species. These include ''Schinia bina'', which has been recorded from '' V. encelioides'', and '' Schinia siren'' which feeds exclusively on that species. Pollen grains from eight of the nine species of ''Verbesina'' found in Brazil have been characterized as oblate-spheroidal, medium-sized, isopolar monads. They are 3-colplorate with a subtriangular amb, a small polar area, a long colpus, a lalongate endoaperture, a caveate exine and an echinate sexine. Melampodium
''Melampodium'' is a genus of flowering plants in the sunflower family. These are rugged plants native to the tropical to subtropical regions that include Central America, Southwestern United States, California, Florida, the Caribbean, and South America. Most of the species can be found in Mexico, five in the Southwestern United States, and three are scattered in Colombia and Brazil. Some sources say that the name ''Melampodium'' is derived from the Greek words μέλας (''melas''), meaning "black", and πόδιον (''podion''), meaning "foot". This refers to the color of the base of the stem and roots. Members of the genus are commonly known as blackfoots. Other authorities, however, maintain that this is in error, that the name comes from Melampus, a soothsayer of renown in Greek mythology. The genus consists of annuals and perennials or bushy plants, growing to a height of 1 m. When fully grown, they tend to fall over. They like average, well-drained soil, but can equall ...
