Webster Wagner House
Webster Wagner House was a historic home located at Palatine Bridge in Montgomery County, New York. It was built in 1876 and designed by architect Horatio Nelson White (1814–1892) as the home for railroad car magnate Webster Wagner (1817–1882). It consisted of a -story main block with a 2-story rear service wing. It featured a 3-story entrance tower at the southeast corner. Palatine Bridge, New York
Palatine Bridge is a village in Montgomery County, New York, United States. The population was 737 at the 2010 census. The basis of the name is the community's location in a region settled by Palatine Germans. The Village of Palatine Bridge is in the Town of Palatine. The community is in the western part of the county, west of Amsterdam. History Palatine Bridge was settled in 1723. A bridge across the Mohawk River here built in 1798 gave the community its name. The village was incorporated in 1867. The Frey House, Palatine Bridge Freight House, and Webster Wagner House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Horatio Nelson White (February 8, 1814 – July 29, 1892) was an American architect based out of Syracuse, New York, and became one of New York State's most prominent architects from about 1865 to 1880. Montgomery County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 49,532. The county seat is Fonda. The county was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 at the Battle of Quebec. Webster Wagner
Webster Wagner (October 2, 1817 – January 13, 1882) was an American inventor, manufacturer and politician from New York. Life Wagner was born near Palatine Bridge, New York. He developed a wagon-making business with his brother James. The business had folded by 1842, largely due to the Panic of 1837. After serving as an employee for the New York Central Railroad, Wagner invented the sleeping car and luxurious parlor car. He also perfected a system of ventilating railroad cars. His inventions were first used on the NY Central and later spread to other lines. He founded the Wagner Palace Car Company, located in Buffalo, New York. Several legal battles with the Pullman Company failed to put him and his partners out of business. He was married to Susan Davis, and they had five children. Rail Car Grand Isle
The Rail Car "Grand Isle" was a private railroad car operated as part of the Rutland Railroad and then the Central Vermont Railway from 1899 to 1959. It is now an exhibition building at Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont. History The Wagner Palace Car Company fabricated the rail car ''Grand Isle'' in April 1899 for Dr. William Seward Webb, president of the company from 1885 to 1899. The wood-clad business car was initially listed as Rutland RR 500 ''Grand Isle''. Although Webb was trained as a physician, his father-in-law, William Henry Vanderbilt, persuaded him to give up the medical profession and join the family's railroad enterprise instead.
