Weather Machine
''Weather Machine'' is a Lumino kinetic art, lumino kinetic bronze sculpture and columnar machine that serves as a weather beacon, displaying a weather prediction each day at noon. Designed and constructed by Omen Design Group Inc., the approximately sculpture was installed in 1988 in a corner of Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland, Oregon, United States. Two thousand people attended its dedication, which was broadcast live nationally from the square by ''Today (U.S. TV program), Today'' weatherman Willard Scott. The machine cost $60,000. During its daily two-minute sequence, which includes a trumpet fanfare, mist, and flashing lights, the machine displays one of three metal symbols as a prediction of the weather for the following 24-hour period: a sun for clear and sunny weather, a Great Blue Heron, blue heron for drizzle and transitional weather, or a dragon and mist for rainy or stormy weather. An air quality index (AQI) is used by government agencies to communicate to the public how polluted the air currently is or how polluted it is forecast to become. AQI information is obtained by averaging readings from an air quality sensor, which can increase due to vehicle traffic, forest fires, or anything that can increase air pollution. Pollutants tested include ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, among others. Public health risks increase as the AQI rises, especially affecting children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular issues. During these times, governmental bodies generally encourage people to reduce physical activity outdoors, or even avoid going out altogether. Osteomyelitis (OM) is an infection of bone. Symptoms may include pain in a specific bone with overlying redness, fever, and weakness. Terence O'Donnell
Terence O'Donnell (1924 - 2001) was an American writer. He was born in Portland, Oregon and graduated from the University of Chicago. He resided in Portland most of his life and worked at the Oregon Historical Society. During the latter part of his life, he spent some of his in an apartment on the South Park Blocks in Portland. O'Donnell is perhaps best known as the author of the ''Garden of the Brave in War: Recollections of Iran'', which was published in 1980, during the Iran hostage crisis. The book was praised by critics and, although it did not attain broad popular readership, it is now regarded as a classic work. Dick Ponzi (born 26 March 1934) is an American winemaker, a pioneer of the Oregon wine industry and the Oregon brewing industry, and the founder of Ponzi Vineyards, one of the Willamette Valley's founding wineries.
