We Could Be Astronauts are a British rock band that formed in York, England, in 2009. The band consists of Robert Hughes (vocals, guitar), Simon Himsworth (guitar, backing vocals), Stuart Fletcher (bass), Paul Heaney (guitar), and Dave Hartley (drums, backing vocals). History In mid-2009, Dave Hartley and Mark Meilack, both formerly of Hijak Oscar, were approached by Robert Hughes with a demo CD of four tracks. Former Idle Jack drummer Simon Himsworth and York-based guitarist Paul Heaney joined shortly after. The name We Could Be Astronauts is based on a line taken from a One Eskimo song called "Astronauts". The actual line is "We can be astronauts". Meilack left the band to move to Brighton to form a new band in October 2011. This opened a door for Stuart Fletcher who in the past played for The Seahorses, The Yards, and Rick Witter & The Dukes. Stuart Fletcher (musician)
Stuart Michael Fletcher (born 16 January 1976 in York) is an English people, English bass guitar, bass player. He is best known as the bassist in John Squire's post The Stone Roses band, The Seahorses. Prior to joining The Seahorses, Fletcher had been performing in local York bands since the age of 11. On 22 March 1996 Fletcher was spotted by Squire in the York venue Fibbers, where he was playing with local blues pub band The Blueflies. He was filling in for the band's usual bass player, who was unable to play due to repetitive strain injury. Following the gig, Fletcher was handed a cassette of demos Squire had recorded and asked to join the band. Since the demise of the musical ensemble, band, Fletcher has continued to play with local York bands such as Hayley Hutchinson, The Yards featuring fellow ex-Seahorse Chris Helme, and Rick Witter's band, Rick Witter & The Dukes. BBC Radio York is the BBC's local radio station serving the county of North Yorkshire. It broadcasts on FM, DAB, digital TV and via BBC Sounds from studios in the Bootham area of York. According to RAJAR, the station has a weekly audience of 59,000 listeners and a 3.7% share as of September 2022. Early history In May 1982, just over a year before the station was due to launch, a temporary service was provided to cover Pope John Paul II's visit to York. Minster FM was a local radio station serving York and the surrounding areas such as Selby, Tadcaster, Thirsk, Northallerton and Goole. The station closed on 31 August 2020 and its frequency is now a relay of Greatest Hits Radio Yorkshire York & North Yorkshire. It broadcast on 104.7 FM from the Acklam Wold transmitter, near Leavening, on the Yorkshire Wolds. Hugh Bayley
Sir Hugh Nigel Edward Bayley (born 9 January 1952) is a British Labour politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for York Central, previously York and City of York, from 1992 to 2015. Early life Bayley was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, and was educated at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, the University of Bristol, where he obtained a Politics BSc degree in 1974, before pursuing further studies at the University of York, where he was awarded a BPhil degree in Southern African studies in 1976. Shed Seven
Shed Seven are a alternative rock band, formed in York in 1990. One of the groups which contributed to the Britpop music scene of the 1990s, they continue to write, record and release music over thirty years later. They originally comprised singer Rick Witter, guitarist/keyboardist Joe Johnson, bassist Tom Gladwin and drummer Alan Leach. Johnson was later replaced by Paul Banks (musician, born 1973), Paul Banks, although a later lineup of the band included both Johnson and Banks. They belonged to the post-The Smiths, Smiths wave of British musicians such as The Sundays and Marion (band), Marion, with a sound relying heavily on complex guitar arpeggios often in a minor key, and wailing vocals.
