Waynesboro Generals
The Waynesboro Generals are a collegiate summer baseball team in Waynesboro, Virginia. They play in the southern division of the Valley Baseball League. The Generals have won six Valley League playoff championships: in 1984, 1988, 1998, 2007, 2013, and 2014, making them one of the most winning organizations of the league during that time. The Generals were founded in 1923 and have been playing continuously since then with the exception of a ten year period between 1955 and 1964. In 2007, the Generals' victory came two games to zero over the Luray Wranglers. In 2013, the Generals won the South Division and then prevailed in the final series two games to one over the Strasburg Express. In 2014, the Generals again won the South and came back from a 6-0 deficit to defeat the Charles Town Cannons of the North Division, 7-6, with a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning of the championship game. Valley Baseball League
The Valley Baseball League is an NCAA and MLB-sanctioned collegiate summer baseball league in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia. The league was started in 1923 and sanctioned by the NCAA in 1961. It has been a wooden bat league since 1993. It is one of almost a dozen leagues in the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball. The VBL is funded in part by a grant from Major League Baseball. The Valley League has produced well over 1,000 professional baseball players, including a record 79 former players drafted in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. In 2007, the Valley Baseball League expanded to include one new team with the addition of the Fauquier Gators. Another team was planned to be added in Lexington, Virginia but difficulties with the lighting system delayed the team's addition to the league. Waynesboro (formerly Flack) is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is a principal city of the Staunton-Waynesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waynesboro is located in the Shenandoah Valley and is surrounded by Augusta County. As of the 2020 census, the population was 22,196. Collegiate Summer Baseball
Collegiate summer baseball leagues are amateur baseball leagues in the United States and Canada featuring players who have attended at least one year of college and have at least one year of athletic eligibility remaining. Generally, they operate from early June to early August. In contrast to college baseball, which allow aluminum or other composite baseball bats, players in these leagues use only wooden bats, hence the common nickname of these leagues as "wood-bat leagues". Collegiate summer leagues allow college baseball players the ability to compete using professional rules and equipment, giving them experience and allowing professional scouts the opportunity to observe players under such conditions. Strasburg Express
The Strasburg Express are a collegiate summer baseball team playing in the Northern Division of the Valley Baseball League. The team is based in Strasburg, Virginia and plays its home games at First Bank Park, on the grounds of Sandy Hook Elementary School. Strasburg joined the league in 2011, replacing the defunct Fauquier Gators. The Express have won three Valley League championships, in 2015, 2016, and 2021. Following the 2016 championship, the team was ranked 8th in the nation among collegiate summer teams. Michael Averett Lowell (born February 24, 1974) is an American former Major League Baseball third baseman. During a 13-year career, Lowell played for the New York Yankees (1998), Florida Marlins (1999–2005), and the Boston Red Sox (2006–2010). With the Red Sox, he was named MVP of the World Series. Charles Brandon Inge ( ; born May 19, 1977) is an American former professional baseball third baseman and catcher and currently a volunteer assistant coach for the Michigan Wolverines baseball team. He played 12 seasons with the Detroit Tigers, one with the Oakland Athletics and one with the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball (MLB). He bats and throws right-handed. Erik Floyd Kratz (born June 15, 1980) is an American former professional baseball catcher who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Rays, and New York Yankees during an 11-year career.
