Wayne Smith (diplomat)
Wayne S. Smith (born 1932 in Texas) is a former US diplomat, and academia, academic and author. He is an author on the subject of Cuba and U.S.- Cuba relations having published 4 books on the topic. Government service In 1949, Smith joined the United States Marine Corps, and served until 1953, including combat in the 1950-1953 Korean War. In 1957, he joined the US State Department, serving in posts in Brazil, the Soviet Union, Argentina and Cuba. From 1979 to 1982, he was the second Chief of Mission of the US Interests Section in Havana under President Jimmy Carter and President Ronald Reagan. Smith retired after 25 years in the Foreign Service due to personal disagreement with the policies of Reagan in Latin America. In particular, he disagreed with the Reagan policies in Central America at the time (Iran Contra, military advisers in El Salvador and Nicaragua) and Cuba. Richard Wayne Smith, commonly known as Wayne Smith, (born August 17, 1943) is a former seven-term Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives for District 128. He was first elected in November 2002 and served until January 2017. On May 24, 2016, Smith was unseated by 23 votes in the Republican runoff election by Briscoe Cain, 3,050 (50.2%) to 3,027 (49.8%). Political life Elections In the 2016 Republican Primary, held on March 1, Smith had two challengers—Briscoe Cain and Melody McDaniel. Smith received 43.75% of the vote and Cain received 47.83%, resulting in a runoff. In the runoff election, held on May 24, Smith lost to Briscoe Cain by 23 votes − 3,050 (50.2%) to 3,027 (49.8%). Wayne Douglas Smith (born 4 November 1952) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1999 to 2003, representing the electorate of South Coast. He was the only incumbent ALP member to lose his seat at the 2003 state election. Smith was born in Newcastle and educated at Birrong Boys High School. He received a B.Sc. and a Dip.Ed from the University of Sydney. Smith trained as a teacher, and was working at Vincentia High School when he decided to contest ALP pre-selection for the Liberal-held state seat of South Coast. Wayne Anthony Smith (born November 17, 1979) is a former professional Canadian football offensive lineman who played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 2004 to 2017. He was drafted first overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 2004 CFL Draft and spent four seasons over two stints with the team. Wayne Smith is an Australian former professional Rugby League footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. He played for Western Suburbs and Cronulla-Sutherland in the NSWRL competition. Playing career Smith made his first grade debut for Western Suburbs in 1976. In 1978, Western Suburbs finished as minor premiers and look favorites to make their first grand final since 1963 under new coach Roy Masters who turned the club from also-rans to premiership contenders. Wests went on to lose both finals games, Smith missed out playing in the first finals game against Cronulla but returned in time to play in the club's 14–7 preliminary final loss against Manly-Warringah. Wayne Ross Smith (born 19 April 1957) is a New Zealand rugby union coach and former player. He has won three Rugby World Cups; he was an assistant coach with New Zealand's men's team, the All Blacks, who won the 2011 and 2015 World Cups, and as head coach of the New Zealand women's team, the Black Ferns, won the 2021 World Cup, held in 2022.
