Wayne Art Center
The Wayne Art Center is a non-profit art center in Wayne, Pennsylvania that has offered classes, lectures, events and exhibitions for more than 90 years. The Wayne Art Center was organized in 1931 and incorporated in 1932 during the Great Depression. Its mission was to share joy in beauty and art among the broader community. The Center's current executive director is Nancy Campbell, who took over the position in 1987. Each year the Wayne Art Center offers approximately 500 classes to around 5,000 students. In December, it hosts the annual CraftForms exhibition, a juried show of national and international craft artists. Through events such as its biennial juried quilt exhibition, Art Quilt Elements, the Center focuses on craftsmanship and the use of traditional media by modern craft artists. Wayne is an unincorporated community centered in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on the Main Line, a series of highly affluent Philadelphia suburbs located along the railroad tracks of the Pennsylvania Railroad and one of the wealthiest areas in the nation. While the center of Wayne is in Radnor Township, Wayne extends into both Tredyffrin Township in Chester County and Upper Merion Township in Montgomery County. The center of Wayne was designated the Downtown Wayne Historic District in 2012. Considering the large area served by the Wayne post office, the community may extend slightly into Easttown Township, Chester County, as well. Mary Zicafoose is an American textile artist, weaver, and teacher who specializes in '' ikat'', an ancient technique in which threads are wrapped, tied and resist-dyed before weaving. Zicafoose is the author of ''Ikat: The Essential Handbook to Weaving Resist-Dyed Cloth'' (2020). Ikat
''Ikat'' (in Indonesian languages means "bind") is a dyeing technique originating from Indonesia used to pattern textiles that employs resist dyeing on the yarns prior to dyeing and weaving the fabric. In ''ikat'', the resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern. The yarns are then dyed. The bindings may then be altered to create a new pattern and the yarns dyed again with another colour. This process may be repeated multiple times to produce elaborate, multicolored patterns. When the dyeing is finished all the bindings are removed and the yarns are woven into cloth. In other resist-dyeing techniques such as tie-dye and ''batik'' the resist is applied to the woven cloth, whereas in ikat the resist is applied to the yarns before they are woven into cloth.
