Joe May
Joe May (born Joseph Otto Mandl; 7 November 1880 – 29 April 1954) was an Austrian film director and film producer and one of the pioneers of German cinema. Biography After studying in Berlin and a variety of odd jobs, he began his career as a stage director of operettas in Hamburg. In 1902 he had married the actress Mia May (born Hermine Pfleger) and took his stage name from hers. Continental-Kunstfilm As Joe May, he made ten films for Continental-Kunstfilm GmbH in Berlin; the first, ''In der Tiefe des Schachtes (In the Depths of the Pit)'' was released in November 1912, followed by ''Vorglühen des Balkanbrandes (The Balkan Traitors)'' (starring Ernst Reicher). Hermann Vallentin
Hermann Vallentin (24 May 1872 – 18 September 1945) was a German actor. Biography Hermann Vallentin was born in Berlin in 1872. He was the son of a Jewish timber merchant and factory owner, Felix Vallentin. He was the older brother of actress Rosa Valetti. After training as an actor at the Royal Theatre in Berlin with Max Grube and Hans Oberländer, he received his first engagement at the Central-Theatre in Berlin in the 1895/96 season. In the next few years, appearances on various Berlin stages followed. From 1914, Vallentin was also a film actor. He mostly embodied fatherly figures, patriarchs and directors, but also small-minded philistines. In the 1931 film version of '' Der Hauptmann von Köpenick'', he played the uniform tailor Adolph Wormser. The seizure of power by the National Socialists in 1933, ended his film career abruptly. Mia May (born Hermine Pfleger; 2 June 1884 – 28 November 1980) was an Austrian actress. She was married to the Austrian film producer and director Joe May and appeared in 44 films between 1912 and 1924. Her daughter was the actress Eva May. Biography Mia May was born Hermine Pfleger on 2 June 1884 in Vienna, the daughter of Johann Pfleger, a baker, and Albine Pfleger (née. Steinfelder). Her older sister, Maria (1879–1958), who acted under the stage name Mitzi Telmont, was the second wife of the comedian Heinrich Eisenbach. She made her stage debut at Jantsch Theater at the age of 5, playing child roles until she was 14. She continued her stage career as a teenager, taking on the stage name Herma Angelot, and appearing at the Apollo Theater as an actress and singer.
