Waverley School is a mixed all-through school located in Small Heath, Birmingham, England. History The co-educational Waverley Grammar School was situated between Byron Road and Waverley Road, now next to the A45–Muntz St (B4145) roundabout, and next to Small Heath Park. This school is now Small Heath Leadership Academy. In 2006, Waverley was recognized as one of the most improved schools at GCSE level in England. The 2010 Ofsted inspection rated the school Outstanding. The school has expanded in recent years to become an all-through school for primary, secondary and sixth form education. An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. Heartlands Hospital is an acute general hospital in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, England. It is managed by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. History The hospital has its origins in an infectious diseases hospital known as City Hospital, Little Bromwich which was completed in June 1895. Intended for activation only at times of medical emergency, it was tasked with responding to a typhoid fever outbreak in 1901. Three additional pavilions and a nurses' home were added in 1904. It treated patients with scarlet fever, measles, diphtheria and tuberculosis during the First World War. After joining the National Health Service as Little Bromwich Hospital in 1948, it became a general hospital in 1953. It was renamed East Birmingham Hospital in 1963 and saw considerable expansion in the 1970s. Bordesley Green
Bordesley Green is an inner-city area of Birmingham, England about two miles east of the city centre. It also contains a road of the same name. It is in the Bordesley Green Ward which also covers some of Small Heath. Heartlands Hospital is located in the eastern part of Bordesley Green. The area is also served by Yardley Green Medical Centre and Omnia Practice. Kingfisher Country Park covers the River Cole recreation grounds which are partially covered by the area's boundaries. Small Heath Leadership Academy is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form located in the Small Heath area of Birmingham, England. The school serves an inner-city area of Birmingham. History It was built as a Birmingham board school in 1892 by architects Martin & Chamberlain and is a Grade II* listed building. It later became the co-educational Waverley Grammar School, and then the comprehensive Small Heath School. Small Heath is an area in south-east Birmingham, West Midlands, England situated on and around the Coventry Road about from the city centre. History Small Heath, which has been settled and used since Roman times, sits on top of a small hill. The slightly elevated site offers poor agricultural land, lying on a glacial drift of sand, gravel, and clay, resulting in a heathland that provides adequate grazing for livestock. The land, therefore, seems to have developed as a pasture or common land, on which locals could graze their animals. However, the site lies directly on the route between Birmingham and Coventry, and so was probably used by drovers transporting animals to and from the two cities, and the livestock markets within each.
