Watterson, Texas
Watterson is an unincorporated community in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Watterson is named for Charles Coffin Watterson who, along with his wife Martha, settled in the area in 1852 to farm and raise livestock. The Wattersons were soon joined by Samuel and Caroline Wolfenbarger and others engaged in the same pursuits. Initially, the community was known as Live Oaks and a post office with that name was established in 1878. Charles Watterson served as the first postmaster. In 1891, the town was renamed in his honor. By 1896, the community had 100 residents, a Methodist church, a cotton gin, gristmill and general store. The post office closed in 1904. During the 1930s, the town still had a community center and Methodist church. Smithville is a city in Bastrop County, Texas, Bastrop County, Texas, United States, near the Colorado River (Texas), Colorado River. The population was 3,922 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. History Thomas Jefferson Gazley arrived in 1827 and set the pace of development for Smithville by building the first house and establishing the first store, which served incoming settlers. He later served in the Mexican government and helped write the Texas Declaration of Independence and the first Constitution, and became a true Texas hero. William Smith's family arrived several years after Gazley. Bastrop () is a city and the county seat of Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,688 according to the 2020 census. It is located about southeast of Austin and is part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Spanish soldiers lived temporarily at the current site of Bastrop as early as 1804, when a fort was established where the Old San Antonio Road crossed the Colorado River and named ''Puesta del Colorado''. Bastrop's namesake, Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop, was a commoner named Philip Hendrik Nering Bogel, who was wanted for embezzlement in his native country of the Netherlands. In Texas, he assisted Moses and Stephen F. Austin in obtaining land grants in Texas and served as Austin's land commissioner. Rockne is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Bastrop County, Texas, Bastrop County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 400 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Rockne started with German Americans, German settlers, such as the Lehman family, sometime before 1846. The first church included another community called Meuth, Texas, Meuth, but was eventually separated. Seven families began to worship in the community. The first service was held at Phillip Goertz's home in 1876 and a church was built in the area after the land was donated by him and his wife, Catherine, alongside Michael and Rebecca Wolf. It then burned in 1891. Another church was then built on of land that was donated by John and Rosina Lehman in 1892. It was here that the community was established.
