Waterside is a village in East Ayrshire, Scotland, situated about five miles north of Galston on the Craufurdland Water in the Parish of Fenwick. It lies a few miles north of Moscow on the A719 and had a population of 141 in the Census of 2001. History The mill Previously known as Hareshaw Mill this old carding mill dates from 1784 and has gone through a number of uses,Close, Page 126 even hosting a bookshop at one point. The 1856 OS map records the location of the weir, sluice, and lade that diverted and carried water to the mill wheel from the Craufurdland Water. By 1910 the OS maps show that the wollen mill was no longer in use as a mill. Part of the mill became a private dwelling. Although built as a carding mill, Waterside Mill was later also used for weaving. The wheelpit of the mill still survives. Waverton is a linear village and civil parish in the Allerdale borough of Cumbria, England. Waverton lies on the main A596 road east of a bridge over the River Waver, 2.2 miles south west from Wigton and 14.2 miles from the nearest city, Carlisle. The river is the reason for Waverton's name as well as it coming from the old English word tuǹ, this meaning "An enclosure; a farmstead; a village; an estate". Population There were no major changes in the population of Waverton in the nineteenth century, when population first began to be collected in the Census. The Waterside (Ulster-Scots: ''Wattèrbroo'', ) generally refers to the part of Derry on the east bank of the River Foyle. Traditionally, the Waterside ends at the Caw roundabout near the Foyle Bridge. Areas such as Eglinton and Limavady are not part of the Waterside. The Waterside is a mainly Protestant and unionist area, while the rest of Derry City is mainly Irish Catholic and nationalist. During the Troubles, the Waterside's Protestant population grew, probably as a result of Protestants moving there from the west side of the river. The Waterside contains the city's main hospital, Altnagelvin, as well as St. Columb's Park and the former Ebrington Parade Ground. Waterside is a small village next to Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire, on the eastern outskirts. It is roughly 10 miles north-east of Glasgow. History In former times, Waterside was characterised by its neat and tidy weavers' cottages on the north bank of the Luggie river, and its picturesque mills on the south bank. In between lay a well-built mill dam. Many of the former weavers' cottages survive but the mills have long since been demolished. The mill dam has collapsed into a scattering of stones on the river bed. The upper of the two mills, built in 1779 as a lint mill for the processing of flax for the local linen industry, was situated beside the dam, and was a popular subject for picture postcards. The Waterside, is a festival marketplace on the Elizabeth River in downtown Norfolk, Virginia, opened June 1, 1983. While the Waterside Annex was demolished May 16, 2016, the main portion was renovated and reopened as Waterside District in May 2017. Waterside Plaza is a residential and business complex located on the East River in the Kips Bay section of Manhattan, New York City. It was formerly a Mitchell-Lama Housing Program-funded rental project. History Waterside Plaza was built on landfill brought to the U.S. as ships' ballast from the rubble of the city of Bristol in the U.K., which was bombed by the Luftwaffe in World War II during the Bristol Blitz. The apartment buildings, as well as the neighboring United Nations International School, were constructed on top of platforms supported by over 2,000 concrete piles sunk into the East River. Developed by Richard Ravitch, the first apartment buildings opened in 1973 and the complex was completed the following year.
