Waters Farm
Waters Farm is a historic farm and homestead at 53 Waters Road in Sutton, Massachusetts. Waters Farm was built in the Georgian style by Stephen Waters in 1757. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. History Built in 1757, Waters Farms Preservation, Inc. now maintains the property. It has of protected watershed land donated to the town by Dorothea Waters Moran in 1974. The main house was built in the mid- to late 18th century and was also donated to the town. Most outbuildings were donated or constructed on site after the town received the property, including a blacksmith shop, shingle mill, barn, wagon shed and sugar house. From 1871 to 1912, the businessman Charles Andrew Whitney resided at Waters Farms. Today, Waters Farms is an open-air museum. Charles Andrew Whitney
Charles Andrew Whitney (November 14, 1834 – December 31, 1912) was an American businessman and industrialist in the late 19th century, born in Princeton, Massachusetts. He was part of the prominent American Whitney family. In 1859, Charles, his brother Levi L. Whitney, and Orville E. Thompson helped lead the large-scale manufacturing of leather boots and shoes in Chicago and were attributed with successfully running the first factory of its kind there. Whitney himself held patents for the manufacture of leather. Thompson, Whitney, and Co. (later Whitney Bros. and Co.) had 300 workers and annual revenue of over $300,000, producing over 100 cases of leather goods per week at its peak. In the 1860s, the company was among the top producers in the rapidly growing Chicago leather industry, and its products were showcased in the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867. Sutton, Massachusetts
Sutton, officially the Town of Sutton, is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 9,357 in the 2020 United States Census. Located in the Blackstone Valley, the town was designated as a Preserve America community in 2004. History A Nipmuc, John Wampas, visited England in the 1600s and deeded land in the Sutton area to Edward Pratt, who later sold interests to others. Competing claims involving the Nipmucs led to a Massachusetts General Court case in 1704, which granted Pratt and fellow proprietors an eight-mile-square section of land, which is now Sutton. Three families were the first to settle in Sutton, namely those of Elisha Johnson, Nathaniel Johnson, and Benjamin Marsh, who is credited as a founder of the town and the First Baptist Church of Sutton.
