Water Polo In The United States
Water polo in the United States is governed by different organizations. The USA Water Polo (USAWP) governs most levels of water polo in the country, including the national teams and amateur tournaments. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) governs colleges, and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) governs high schools. No professional water polo leagues run in the United States. National water polo teams The United States men's and women's national water polo teams represent the United States in international tournaments, including the Olympic Games, World Aquatics Championships, FINA Water Polo World Cup, FINA Water Polo World League, and Pan American Games. Men's national team The United States men's national water polo team has won multiple medals in international tournaments. USA Water Polo is the governing body of the sport of water polo in the United States and is a member of the United States Aquatic Sports. USA Water Polo is responsible for fielding national teams and hosts 20 annual tournaments. The Organization has its headquarters in Irvine, California. History 1970s USA Water Polo was formed in 1978 after a new law designated the United States Olympic Committee as the governing body for all Olympic activity in the United States. Water polo in the United States had previously been controlled by the Amateur Athletic Union. The organization is now responsible for Olympic development. The US has fielded a women's national team since the 1970s. Tina Bejarano, Lara Ruiz, Carmen Bejarano, Debbie Powell, Desiree Zepeda and Anabel Barragon played on a team from Commerce, California during this era. Water Polo At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's Tournament
The men's tournament of water polo at the 2008 Summer Olympics at Beijing, People's Republic of China, began on 10 August and lasted until 24 August 2008. All games were held at the Ying Tung Natatorium. Teams from twelve nations competed, seeded into two groups for the preliminary round. 44 games were played, 30 of them in the preliminary round (each team played the other teams in the group). Seven classification games and seven games in the medal round were also played. The FINA Men's Water Polo World Cup is an international water polo tournament, organized by FINA and featuring eight men's national teams. It was established in 1979, initially taking place on odd years. Since 2002 it is held every four years, in the even-year between Olympics. The 1986 Men's World Water Polo Championship was the fifth edition of the men's water polo tournament at the World Aquatics Championships, organised by the world governing body in aquatics, the FINA. The tournament was held from 13 to 23 August 1986, and was incorporated into the 1986 World Aquatics Championships in Madrid, Spain. This was the only men's world championship to have featured fifteen teams instead of the usual sixteen. Yugoslavia won its first title by defeating Italy in the final. The FINA World Championships or World Aquatics Championships are the World Championships for aquatics sports: Swimming (sport), swimming, Diving (sport), diving, high diving, open water swimming, artistic swimming, and water polo. They are run by FINA, and all swimming events are contested in a Olympic-size swimming pool, long course (50-metre) pool. The event was first held in 1973 World Aquatics Championships, 1973 in Belgrade, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Yugoslavia, and is now held every two years. The men's water polo tournament at the 1992 Summer Olympics was held from 1 to 10 August 1992, in Barcelona, Spain. Reigning world champion Yugoslavia had qualified for the tournament, but as it had formally dissolved in the interim, it did not participate. The successor countries did not participate for several reasons. The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) could not participate due to the UN sanctions due to their aggression on Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Croatia, which was the strongest among them at the time (the Croatian club was champion of Yugoslavia and European Champions' Cup winner), also did not participate in the water polo tournament. The position of Yugoslavia was replaced by Czechoslovakia.
