Water Wally
Water Wally is the name of the official Singapore Public Utilities Board (PUB) mascot. Water Wally is blue in colour and shaped like a water droplet. Water Wally conveys messages about water conservation and usage to the public. Mascot Unveiling Water Wally was unveiled on 4 August 2005 by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources at an official launch held at MacRitchie Reservoir. In a two-week "teaser" campaign leading up to the official unveiling, thirty three-metre-high Water Wally inflatable balloons were displayed suspended above various reservoirs and canals around Singapore. A "Where's Wally"-inspired contest to spot the mascot was publicized in national newspapers, receiving over two thousand SMS and email entries. Five of the inflatables were reported as having gone missing during the campaign. Public Utilities Board
The Public Utilities Board (PUB) is a statutory board under the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment of the Government of Singapore responsible for ensuring a sustainable and efficient water supply in Singapore. The PUB regulates and oversees the country's entire water supply system, which comprises the water catchment systems, drainage systems, water works, pipeline network, water reclamation plants and sewage systems. In April 2020, PUB was also appointed Singapore's National Coastal Protection Agency. Yaacob Ibrahim
Yaacob bin Ibrahim ( Jawi: ; born 3 October 1955) is a Singaporean former politician who served as Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs between 2002 and 2018, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports between 2002 and 2004, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources between 2004 and 2011, Minister for Communications and Information between 2011 and 2018, and Minister-in-charge of Cyber Security between 2015 and 2018. MacRitchie Reservoir
MacRitchie Reservoir is Singapore's oldest reservoir. The reservoir was completed in 1868 by impounding water from an earth embankment, and was then known as the Impounding Reservoir or Thomson Reservoir. History Before the early 19th century, most of the main island of Singapore was covered with primary forest. Soon after the British established a settlement in Singapore in 1819 and commercial activity took root, there was a demand for fresh water. However, it was decades before the settlement's first fresh water supply was established. In 1927, a water treaty was signed with the Sultan of Johor and Singapore started receiving treated water from the Gunong Pulai water project Johor in 1930. NEWater
NEWater is the brand name given to highly treated reclaimed wastewater produced by Singapore's Public Utilities Board. NEWater is produced by further purifying conventionally treated wastewater through microfiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet irradiation. The water is potable quality and can be added to drinking water supply reservoirs where it is withdrawn and treated again in conventional water treatment plants before being distributed to consumers. However, most NEWater is currently used for non-drinking purposes, mostly by industries with production requirements for high purity water. Okto is a daily children's program block on Mediacorp's Channel 5. The block airs daily during 5's morning and midafternoon time slots.
