The ''Washington Times-Herald'' is a daily newspaper serving Washington, Indiana, and adjacent portions of Daviess County, Indiana. It is owned by Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. and presently the only daily newspaper in Washington, Indiana. History Although the newspaper's motto is "Serving Washington and surrounding communities since 1867", the paper's history goes back to the ''Washington Democrat'' weekly, founded 1863. The ''Democrat'' changed its name to ''Daily Times'' in 1955; on June 1, 1964, it merged with the ''Washington Herald'' (not related to the Washington D.C. newspaper '' The Washington Herald'') to form the ''Times-Herald'', by now the city's only daily newspaper. Washington is a city in Daviess County, Indiana. The population was 11,509 at the time of the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Daviess County. It is also the principal city of the Washington, Indiana Micropolitan Statistical Area, which comprises all of Daviess County and had an estimated 2017 population of 31,648. History Washington was platted in 1815. It was named from Washington Township. The railroad was built through Washington in 1857. By 1889, it was a major depot and repair yard for the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad took over the line in 1893. During this time, the railroad employed over 1,000 workers. On November 17, 2013, an EF2 tornado tore through the western edge of the city destroying 20 homes and severely damaging 20 others. Daviess County is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 31,648. The county seat is Washington, Indiana, Washington. About 15% of the county's population is Amish of Swiss Americans, Swiss origin, as of 2017. History After the American Revolutionary War was settled, the fledgling nation created the Northwest Territory, tentatively divided into two counties. The area that would become the state of Indiana in 1816 was included in the original Knox County, Indiana, Knox County. As the area became more settled, Knox was partitioned into smaller counties, the last of which was the present-day Daviess, authorized on 2 February 1818.
