Washington Stars
The Washington Stars were an American soccer team established in 1987 as F.C. Washington. The team entered the American Soccer League in 1988 under the name Washington Stars and merged with the Maryland Bays in 1990. History Founded in the spring of 1987 as F.C. Washington, the team grew out of the Fairfax Spartans which won the 1986 National Amateur Cup. The team, headed by president Gordon Bradley and located in Fairfax, Virginia, hired John Kerr, Sr. as head coach on June 24, 1987. Coach Bradley was the coach of George Mason University (GMU) at that time. Two of their players, Kent Shiffert and Chris Myers were recruited from GMU. The team played its first game on July 26, 1987 against the Canadian Pan American soccer team. In March 1988, the team became a charter member of the third American Soccer League under the name Washington Stars. The 1988 American Soccer League was the first season of the third American Soccer League which took place during the summer of 1988. History The third American Soccer League owed its creation to several events in the early 1980s. In 1983, the second American Soccer League collapsed from over-expansion, runaway spending and a restricted fan base. A year later, the North American Soccer League collapsed for essentially the same reasons. In 1985, the West-coast based Western Soccer Alliance was created as a regional, financially austere league. This new league kept expenditures low while building its fan base. In 1987, the Lone Star Soccer Alliance began its first season, mimicking the WSA model with teams in or near Texas. George Lidster
George Lidster is the former head men's soccer coach at George Washington University. He held that position from 1987–1996 and 1998–2011, and posted a 188-175-49 record in 22 seasons, making him the all-time winningest coach in school history. Additionally he has compiled an 89-75-23 record in Atlantic 10 conference play, and has won 2 Atlantic 10 tournament titles, and made 3 NCAA tournament appearances. Overview of the 1990 American Professional Soccer League season. Although the Western Soccer League and the American Soccer League merged to form the American Professional Soccer League in 1990, the two leagues remained essentially independent leagues, linked by name alone. During this season, they ran separate regular season schedules with two different points systems. They each had their own playoff formats, had separate league MVPs and had their own All-League teams. Bruce Murray (soccer)
Bruce Edward Murray (born January 25, 1966) is an American former professional soccer player who at the time of his retirement was the all-time leading scorer for the U.S. National Team. His standout college career led to his selection by Soccer America Magazine to its College Team of the Century. He then played professionally in both Europe and the United States, including the American Soccer League and American Professional Soccer League. Concussion syndrome forced him to retire in 1995, Murray had earned 86 caps, scoring 21 goals, including one at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He was also a member of the U.S. national futsal team which placed third at the 1989 FIFA Futsal World Championship. Murray is the Direct of Coaching at Accelerator School DC Metro.
