Washington Square, Syracuse
Washington Square is one of the 26 officially recognized neighborhoods of Syracuse, New York. Description Washington Square encompasses what used to be the old Village of Salina which has a concentration of two, three, and four- family structures, and larger apartments surrounded by single-family homes. The neighborhood contains mixed-use buildings along the North Salina Street corridor. Washington Square has the most historic rooming/boarding houses out of all the city's neighborhoods. Historic multiple residences ranked second highest, and apartment buildings ranked seventh. Almost 50 percent of Washington Square's mixed-use buildings have historic significance. The North Salina Street Historic District runs from the 500 Block (where Prospect Street meets N. Salina Street), to the end of the 900 block at Union Place. The United States census of 2020 was the twenty-fourth decennial United States census. Census Day, the reference day used for the census, was April 1, 2020. Other than a pilot study during the 2000 census, this was the first U.S. census to offer options to respond online or by phone, in addition to the paper response form used for previous censuses. The census was taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected its administration. The census recorded a resident population of 331,449,281 in the fifty states and the District of Columbia, an increase of 7.4 percent, or 22,703,743, over the preceding decade. Salina, New York
Salina is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 33,710 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the Latin word for "salt". Salina is a northwestern suburb of the city of Syracuse. History The region was in the domain of the Onondaga tribe and later was within the Central New York Military Tract, although it was reserved for members of the Onondaga. Salina received its name in 1797, when the Surveyor General received authority to set aside a portion of the Salt Reservation for use in salt manufacture. The Salt Reservation had been created by a treaty with the Native Americans. It extended one mile around Onondaga Lake. In 1798, the Village of Salina was chartered. It was located in what is now the Washington Square neighborhood or "First Ward" of the current City of Syracuse and contained sixteen blocks. The North Salina Street Historic District is a national historic district located on the north side of Syracuse, New York. It encompasses 85 contributing buildings in a section of Syracuse that was home to many German immigrants in the 19th century, and Italian immigrants after the turn of the 20th century. It developed between about 1860 and 1960, and includes examples of Federal, Greek Revival, and Late Victorian style architecture. The Northside is a neighborhood in the city of Syracuse, New York (USA) consisting of a residential area bordered by commercial corridors.
