The city of Sandersville is the county seat of Washington County, Georgia, Washington County, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. It is also a part of the Central Savannah River Area. Sandersville is known as the "Kaolin Capital of the World" due to its abundance of kaolin. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and (0.87%) is water. The area is along the "Fall Line" that separates the Piedmont Plateau and the Atlantic Coastal Plain and is characterized by rolling hills, red clay, pine and hardwood forest, swamplands, and sand beds. Davisboro is a city in Washington County, Georgia, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 1,832. History A post office called Davisboro(ugh) has been in operation since 1821. The community most likely was named after a pioneer settler with the surname Davis. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the place in 1894 as the "Town of Davisboro". On May 18, 1922, Charles Atkins, a 15-year-old African-American boy, was tortured and burnt alive by a white mob some 2,000 people strong after killing a white woman. Oconee is a city in Washington County, Georgia, United States. The population was 280 at the 2000 census. History The city's name derives from the Oconee people (also known as the Hitchiti), a Muskogean-speaking tribe who inhabited central Georgia at time of contact with European-American settlers. The Oconee lived in present-day Baldwin County, Georgia at a settlement known as Oconee Old Town, later moving to the Chattahoochee River in the early 18th century. Warthen is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Washington County, Georgia, United States. The community is located at the junction of Georgia State Route 15 and Georgia State Route 102, north of Sandersville. Warthen has a post office with ZIP code 31094. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 132. History Warthen was the first settlement erected in Washington County and was founded to be the site of the superior courts and the jail for the county. Warthen was erected as a settlement in 1754. It is located in a coastal plain and once embraced territory from the Cherokee corner. Warthen was an early holder of the Washington County county seat until the seat was transferred to Sandersville in 1796. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Warthen in 1812.
