Washington Academy (Maine)
Washington Academy is a private preparatory high school in East Machias, Maine. Founded in 1792, the Academy has an enrollment of 438 boarding and day students. History In the beginning, classes were held in Machias at the Burnham Tavern and the Masonic Hall. It wasn’t until much later that the school got its own building. After deliberation between neighboring towns, the first school building was built in East Machias, opening its doors on September 8, 1823. Today Washington Academy welcomes boys and girls, about 50% of each gender. It has over 350 day students and about 90 residential students- representing more than 20 surrounding communities. As of 2017, the school had 96 international students from 24 different countries. Washington Academy completed construction of a new Health and Wellness Center, and improvements in athletic fields, classroom space, and digital infrastructure in 2011. Notable alumni * George S. Washington Academy (formerly Washington Grammar School and then Washington School) is a co-educational secondary school located in Washington in the City of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. History It was original established as a grammar school but then later became a comprehensive community school administered by Sunderland City Council, with a specialism in technology. The school relocated to new buildings in 2009. In September 2017 Washington School converted to academy status and was renamed Washington Academy. The school is now sponsored by the Consilium Academies Trust. Academics Washington Academy offers GCSEs and vocational courses as programmes of study for pupils. Most graduating students go on to attend Sunderland College which acts as the school's partner further education provider. Washington College Academy
Washington College Academy was a private Presbyterian-affiliated educational institution located in Washington College, Limestone, Tennessee. Founded in 1780 by Doctor of Divinity Samuel Doak, the academy for many years offered accredited college, junior college and college preparatory instruction to day and boarding students, but financial difficulties in the 2000s forced the school to restructure its offerings and focus instead on continuing education courses for adults. Now, the Washington College Academy School for Arts & Crafts offers a variety of classes in metalsmithing, glass, clay, fiber, and mixed media. The academy also hosts a General Educational Development (GED) program to assist area residents in meeting the high school-level academic skills necessary for GED certification.
