Washington's Birthday Marathon
Washington's Birthday Marathon is an annual marathon in the United States that has been held nearly every February since 1962. It is held each year on the Sunday of Washington's Birthday Weekend and is conducted by the DC Road Runners Club. The race was originally held in Arlington, Virginia, but after a few years, it was moved to Beltsville, Maryland. Finally, it was relocated to Greenbelt, Maryland. Greenbelt, Maryland
Greenbelt is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States, and a suburb of Washington, D.C. At the 2020 census, the population was 24,921. Greenbelt is the first and the largest of the three experimental and controversial New Deal Greenbelt Towns, the others being Greenhills, Ohio, and Greendale, Wisconsin. Greenbelt was planned and built by the Federal government. The cooperative community was conceived in 1935 by Undersecretary of Agriculture Rexford Guy Tugwell, whose perceived collectivist ideology attracted opposition to the Greenbelt Towns project throughout its short duration. The project came into legal existence on April 8, 1935, when Congress passed the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act of 1935. Marilyn Bevans
Marilyn Bevans was the first sub-three-hour, African-American female marathon runner, and the first national-class black female American marathoner. She came in second place at the 1973 Maryland Marathon with a time of 3:31:45, and again came in second at the 1977 Boston Marathon, where she ran 2:51:12. In 1977, she was ranked as the 10th fastest female marathoner in the world by ''Track & Field News''. Her personal best came in 1979, when she ran 2:49:56 at the 1979 Boston Marathon. From 2013, her occupation included being a mid-distance and long-distance running coach at Baltimore's Perry Hall High School. She has been named All-Metro Coach of the Year twice. Katherine Switzer
Kathrine Virginia Switzer (born January 5, 1947) is an American marathon runner, author, and television commentator. In 1967, she became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as an officially registered competitor. During her run, race manager Jock Semple assaulted Switzer, trying to grab her bib number and thereby remove her from official competition. After knocking down Switzer's trainer and fellow runner Arnie Briggs when he tried to protect her, Semple was shoved to the ground by Switzer's boyfriend, Thomas Miller, who was running with her, and she completed the race. The AAU banned women from competing in races against men as a result of her run, and it was not until 1972 that the Boston Marathon established an official women's race. Sheldon Karlin (1950 – 16 January 2000) was an American male marathon runner who won the New York City Marathon in 1972. Biography Born in Newark, New Jersey, Karlin grew up in Kenilworth, New Jersey, and ran cross country at David Brearley High School. Karlin attended the University of Maryland and competed for the Maryland Terrapins cross country running team.
