Washington's 29th legislative district is one of forty-nine districts in Washington state for representation in the state legislature. It includes most of Tacoma. The district's legislators are state senator Steve Conway and state representatives Melanie Morgan (position 1) and Sharlett Mena (position 2), all Democrats. The Washington State Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Washington. It is a bicameral body, composed of the lower Washington House of Representatives, composed of 98 Representatives, and the upper Washington State Senate, with 49 Senators plus the Lieutenant Governor acting as president. Tacoma ( ) is the county seat of Pierce County, Washington, United States. A port city, it is situated along Washington's Puget Sound, southwest of Seattle, northeast of the state capital, Olympia, Washington, Olympia, and northwest of Mount Rainier National Park. Melanie Morgan (politician)
Melanie Virginia Morgan (born November 11, 1967) is an American politician serving as a Democratic member of the Washington House of Representatives, representing the 29th legislative district. Career Morgan is a veteran of the United States Army. She was appointed by the Pierce County Council as a member of the Pierce County Housing Authority, and she also served on the Board of Community Healthcare. Morgan was first elected to the Franklin-Pierce School Board in 2015. Morgan was elected to the Washington House of Representatives in 2018, defeating Republican Terry Harder. In the primary, Morgan and Harder advanced to the general election defeating the incumbent David Sawyer. Morgan sponsored House bill 1016 to designate June 19 ("Juneteenth") as a state holiday. Sharlett Mena is an American politician who is a member of the Washington House of Representatives for the 29th district. Elected in November 2022, she assumed office on January 9, 2023. Early life and education The daughter of immigrant farmworkers from Mexico, Mena was raised in Tri-Cities, Washington. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in public administration from Washington State University. Mena was the first member of her family to graduate from college. Washington Redistricting Commission
The Washington Redistricting Commission is a decennial body charged with redrawing congressional and legislative districts in the state of Washington after each census. On November 8, 1983, Washington state passed the 74th amendment to its constitution via Senate Joint Resolution 103 to permanently establish the Redistricting Commission. Earlier that year the first commission redrew the state's congressional map after the previous one drawn by the legislature was ruled unconstitutional.
