Warwick Yates
Warwick Yates (born 24 April 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Career Yates, a ruckman from Lorne, played senior football at Geelong for three seasons. He played 21 league games, 11 of which came in the 1971 VFL season. In 1974 he began playing for Geelong West in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and would go on and play over 200 games for the club. He was a member of Geelong West's 1975 premiership team and captained the club in the 1977 season. Yates won his only club best and fairest in 1979. Geelong West made the grand final that year, which Yates missed after getting injured before the preliminary final. It was reported that he broke "a leg while chopping firewood". Appointed captain-coach in 1980, Yates led the club to the Division 1 preliminary finals and had a strong individual season with an equal sixth placing in the J. J. Liston Trophy. Geelong West Football Club
The Geelong West St Peters Football Club was an Australian rules football club that last competed in the Geelong Football League (GFL) from 1989 until the end of the 2016 season. Prior to its merger with St Peters Football Club in 1989, the club played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1963 until 1988. Geelong West, nicknamed the 'Roosters', wore white and red during its time in the Association. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. 1971 VFL Season
The 1971 VFL season was the 75th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 3 April until 25 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Hawthorn Football Club for the second time, after it defeated by seven points in the 1971 VFL Grand Final. Hawthorn full-forward Peter Hudson kicked 150 goals for the season, equalling the all-time record set by Bob Pratt () in 1934. Best And Fairest
In Australian sport, the best and fairest award recognises the player(s) adjudged to have had the best performance in a game or over a season for a given sporting club or competition. The awards are sometimes dependent on not receiving a suspension for misconduct or breaching the rules during that season. In the Australian Football League (AFL), the Brownlow Medal is awarded to the player who, provided he has not been suspended during the season, receives the most votes from the umpires for being the Fairest and Best player in games during the home and away season. In each game, the umpires award three votes to the player they judge to be the best afield in that game, two votes to the second-best player and one vote to the third-best player. The votes are counted at a gala function on the Monday preceding the Grand Final. 1981 VFA Season
The 1981 Victorian Football Association season was the 100th season of the top division of the Australian rules football competition, and the 21st season of second division competition.
