Ward Russell
Ward T. Russell is an American cinematographer and photographer. He is best known for his collaborations with film director Tony Scott, he served as a chief lighting technician on Scott's films ''Top Gun'', ''Beverly Hills Cop II'', ''Revenge (1990 film), Revenge'', and as a cinematographer on ''Days of Thunder'' and ''The Last Boy Scout'', which Scott also directed. His other cinematography credits include ''Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace'', ''The X-Files (film), The X-Files'', ''Unstoppable (2004 film), Unstoppable'' and ''Cruel World''. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas and is married to film production coordinator Mary Cay Hollander. The cinematographer or director of photography (sometimes shortened to DP or DOP) is the person responsible for the photographing or recording of a film, television production, music video or other live action piece. The cinematographer is the chief of the camera and light crews working on such projects and would normally be responsible for making artistic and technical decisions related to the image and for selecting the camera, film stock, lenses, filters, etc. The study and practice of this field is referred to as cinematography. "Elvis has left the building" is a phrase that was often used by public address announcers at the conclusion of Elvis Presley concerts in order to disperse audiences who lingered in hopes of an encore. It has since become a catchphrase and punchline. Origin The phrase was first used by promoter Horace Logan at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum on the fairgrounds of the Louisiana State Fair in Shreveport, Louisiana, on December 15, 1956. Elvis had appeared in the middle of the night's lineup, and Logan needed to quiet the audience so that the remaining performers could play. The full quotation was: "Elvis has left the building" is also heard at the end of Elvis' March 1961 Pearl Harbor Memorial benefit concert, after Elvis exits at the end of " Hound Dog" and a short coda from the band. ''The Untold Story'' is a 1993 Hong Kong crime-thriller film directed by Herman Yau and starring Danny Lee and Anthony Wong, with the former also serving as the film's producer. In film and television crews, the gaffer or chief lighting technician is the head electrician, responsible for the execution (and sometimes the design) of the lighting plan for a production. The gaffer's assistant is the '' best boy electric''. Etymology There are several possible explanations for the history of the term Gaffer. One possibility is that the term originally referred to the moving of overhead equipment, or before electricity and in Shakespeare-era play theatres, lighting louvers to control lighting levels using a long pole with a wide grappling hook on its end, called a gaff. Another potential origin is as a contraction of " godfather", originally applied by country people to an elderly man, or one whose position entitled him to respect; the female equivalent was "gammer", a contraction of "godmother".
