Wapwallopen is an unincorporated community in Conyngham Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is named for a Lenni Lenape settlement that was established where Big Wapwallopen Creek feeds into the Susquehanna River. The name derives from Lenape ''òphalahpink'' 'place of white wild hemp'. Pennsylvania Route 239 passes through the settlement. Pennsylvania Route 239 (PA 239) is a state highway located in Luzerne, Columbia and Lycoming Counties in Pennsylvania. The southern terminus is at PA 93 in Nescopeck Township. The northern terminus is at PA 42 in North Mountain. The route heads north from PA 93 and parallels the Susquehanna River between Wapwallopen and Mocanaqua before crossing the river into Shickshinny and forming a concurrency with U.S. Route 11 (US 11). Past Shickshinny, PA 239 runs west through rural areas to Benton, where it has a concurrency with PA 487. The route continues northwest and crosses PA 118 before it reaches its northern terminus. Apocynum Cannabinum
''Apocynum cannabinum'' (dogbane, amy root, hemp dogbane, prairie dogbane, Indian hemp, rheumatism root, or wild cotton) is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows throughout much of North America—in the southern half of Canada and throughout the United States. It is poisonous to humans, dogs, cats, and horses. All parts of the plant are toxic and can cause cardiac arrest if ingested. Some Lepidoptera feed on this plant, such as a hummingbird moth. Unami ( del, Wënami èlixsuwakàn) was an Algonquian language spoken by the Lenape people in the late 17th century and the early 18th century, in what then was (or later became) the southern two-thirds of New Jersey, southeastern Pennsylvania and the northern two-thirds of Delaware, but later in Ontario and Oklahoma. It is one of the two Delaware languages, the other being Munsee. The last fluent speaker in the United States, Edward Thompson, of the Delaware Tribe of Indians, died on August 31, 2002. His sister Nora Thompson Dean (1907–1984) provided valuable information about the language to linguists and other scholars. "Lenni-Lenape," literally means "Men of Men", but is translated to mean "Original People." Big Wapwallopen Creek (also known as Wapwallopen Creek or Big Wap) is a tributary of the Susquehanna River in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is approximately long and flows through Bear Creek Township, Fairview Township, Rice Township, Wright Township, Dorrance Township, Hollenback Township, Nescopeck Township, and Conyngham Township.
