Wangaratta Football Club
The Wangaratta Magpies Football Club, officially known as the Wangaratta Magpies Football & Netball Club, is an Australian rules football club, which first played in the Ovens and Murray Football League in 1893 and is based in Wangaratta, Victoria at the Wangaratta Showgrounds and play on the Norm Minns Oval. Club History On 20 June 1864, the first Wangaratta Football Club in Wangaratta was formed, with Edward Lucas, President, Henry B. K. Leigh as Secretary and Thomas Cusack and seven others as committee. The Wangaratta Football Club was then reformed in Wangaratta, in 1875, when matches were played intermittently against other local towns like – Albury, Beechworth, Benalla, Chiltern, Corowa, Howlong, Rutherglen, Tarrawingee and Wahgunyah. Ovens & Murray Football League
The Ovens and Murray Football Netball League (O&MFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball competition containing ten clubs based in north-eastern Victoria, the southern Riverina region of New South Wales and the Ovens and Murray area. The name comes from the Ovens River, the river in the part of north-eastern Victoria covered by the league, and the Murray River, which separates Victoria and New South Wales. The league features three grades in the Australian rules football competition, with these being First-Grade, Reserve-Grade and Under 18s. In the netball competition, there are four grades, with these being A-Grade, B-Grade, C-Grade and Under 16s. Currently a home and away season consisting of eighteen rounds is played. The best five teams then play off according to the McIntyre System, culminating in the O&MFNL Grand Final, which from 1995 to 2017 was held at the Lavington Sports Ground in the Albury suburb of Hamilton Valley. Bert Mills
Bert Mills (16 February 1910 – 6 May 1984) was an Australian rules footballer who played for and captained Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Local brothers, Arthur Mills and Albert Mills played for Bethanga in the 1926 and 1927 Kiewa & District Football Association grand finals, before the family moved to Oxley, near Wangaratta, playing with Wangaratta Football Club in 1929, then both brothers made their debuts for the Hawthorn Football Club in 1930. Bert Mills usually played as a ruckman but was also used at centre half-back. He captained Hawthorn at various times during his career, starting in 1932, then the 1934 and 1938 seasons before his final stint from 1940 until 1941 which was as both captain and coach. Mills won the 1930 Most Consistent player award in his first season of VFL football. During his time at Hawthorn he won their Best and Fairest award three times, in 1933, 1935 and 1939. Percy Alan Jones (20 January 1908 – 14 March 1960) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Originally from Wangaratta, Jones played in Wangaratta's 1925 Ovens & Murray Football League premiership under coach, Percy Rowe. Jones crossed to the Hume Weir Football Club in 1926 (most likely for work during the construction of the Hume Weir), then was recruited to Geelong via Hume Weir Football Club in the Ovens & Murray Football League, after kicking 104 goals in 1928 Jones commenced training with Geelong in March, 1929 and made his senior VFL debut in June, 1929, in round eight, against Hawthorn, kicking two goals, then played again in round nine, against South Melbourne, kicking 1 goal. Ray Usher
Ray Usher (16 October 1904 – 15 April 1964) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Usher played with the Ebden Rovers Football Club in their losing grand final against Hume Weir FC in the Albury & Border Football Association in 1923. In 1924, Usher commenced the season playing with the Wangaratta Football Club in the Ovens & Murray Football League., but by June was playing with the Albury Football Club. In August, 1924, Usher was disqualified until the end of the season. Usher played with Albury once again in 1925. Usher trained with Richmond Football Club in early, 1926, but ended up playing with Coburg Football Club in 1926. Dinny Kelleher
Denis "Dinny" Kelleher (22 July 1902 – 30 May 1963) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton and South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Early life Born in the small rural town of Baddaginnie in 1902. He apparently captained his school's football team, then went on to play with Baddaginnie in the Euroa District Football Association in 1919, 1920 and 1921. Kelleher then played with Benalla in the Ovens and Murray Football League in 1922 and 1923, gaining selection in the OMFL team against the VFL in 1923. He stood out of football in 1924 as Benalla refused to clear him to Wangaratta. Standing out of football for a year gave him an automatic clearance. At Wangaratta he played as the team's centre half-forward in their 1925 Ovens and Murray Football League premiership and 1926 Ovens and Murray Football League grand final loss to St. Patrick's. Jack Nolan (Australian Footballer)
Jack Nolan (14 May 1902 – 28 October 1971) was an Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Nolan was born in Wangaratta and educated at the Wangaratta High School and went onto be a teacher at the Leongatha High School between 1925 and 1928. Nolan was recruited to North Melbourne from Leongatha in 1926. Nolan was a brother of VFL players, Clarrie and Leo. Nolan along with his brothers, established Nolan Brothers Sports Stores in Albury, Leeton and Wangaratta, which became one of the largest inland sports depots in Australia.
