Wanda De Fretes
Wanda de Fretes is a singer and recording artist who was popular in the Netherlands in the 1960s. She is also the daughter of legendary Moluccan steel guitarist George de Fretes and singer Joyce Aubrey. In addition to her solo efforts, she also recorded with her mother as the duo Wanda & Joyce. Besides singing pop and rock'n roll, she also sang traditional Indonesian and Malayan songs. Background Wanda was born in Bandung, Indonesia in 1946 to parents George de Fretes and Joyce Aubrey, both of them musicians. Like her parents, she eventually became a recording artist. By 1952, her parents had divorced and she and her mother had moved to the Netherlands. Ternate is a city in the Indonesian province of North Maluku and an island in the Maluku Islands. Joyce Aubrey was a singer and recording artist who was popular in the Netherlands in the 1960s as part of the duo Wanda & Joyce. She is also the mother of singer Wanda de Fretes as well as the ex-wife of legendary steel guitarist George de Fretes. George De Fretes
George de Fretes (1921-1981) was a musician from Indonesia who found fame in the Netherlands. Like his fellow countrymen Ming Luhulima and Rudi Wairata, he found sizable popularity in the Netherlands and Europe playing Hawaiian music. Background De Fretes came from the Maluku Islands, Indonesia and was born 23 December 1921 in Bandung. He was married to Joyce Aubrey and together they had a daughter Wanda, who was born in Bandung, Indonesia in 1946 and became a recording artist, like her musical parents. By 1952, de Fretes and Aubrey had divorced and she had moved to the Netherlands, taking their daughter Wanda with her. Aubrey joined The Mena Moeria Minstrels as their singer. Coy Pereira
Coy Pereira (1919-2005) was a Netherlands-based guitarist and steel guitarist originally from Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. He was a member of the Kilima Hawaiians and had recorded with the Mena Moeria Minstrels as well as having work released under his own name. He is said to be in the same class of fellow steel guitarists, George de Fretes and Rudi Wairata. Biography Pereira was born on October 22, 1919, in Batavia. He started playing at age 13. He and his wife Hetty had three children. In 1960, he moved to the Netherlands. In later years he and his wife moved to a retirement village in a Rotterdam suburb. He died in hospital on April 12, 2005, aged 86. His daughter Rosy born 1951 is a recording artist, having recorded in the 1970s and 1980s. Wanda & Joyce was a 1960s Netherlands based mother and daughter act made up of Wanda de Fretes and her mother Joyce Aubrey. Background Joyce Aubrey was the ex-wife of steel guitarist George de Fretes and Wanda was their daughter. As an act they lasted from 1962 to 1964. They sang Hawaiian and krontjong songs. Originally from Indonesia, they were based in The Hague.". Prior to teaming up with her daughter, Joyce Aubrey was a singer in the Mena Moeria Minstrels and the Amboina Serenaders. Abraham "Appie" Bueno de Mesquita (July 23, 1918 in Amsterdam – August 19, 2005 in Lelystad) was a Dutch comedian, actor and stage artist, well known for his ability to make funny faces.
